It sets the stage for this much needed discussion, not just with the reader, but within herself. Reliving this painful past has been arduous but necessary in starting the journey to healing and accepting her own God-given uniqueness and beauty. Not every person has identical discriminatory experiences. Some may have experienced social isolation and prejudice in other forms. Others may have been ridiculed for having different beliefs. Perhaps weight was the object of scrutiny. Maybe some were singled out for being too-light skinned. However, in "Momma I Wanna be Light-skinned: My Journey to Acceptance", the author bravely and transparently narrates her journey to wholeness by establishing a new paradigm of self-perception. A perception not formulated by the opinion or approval of others but by introspection. About the Author
Rhonda Bennett is a native of Tuskegee, Alabama. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, AL, where she became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. A mother of two extremely charismatic boys, Rhonda understands the importance of creating an environment that promotes success in an atmosphere where self confidence and purpose can thrive. She has a strong belief that her role as a parent is not to limit her children’s abilities and dreams to make life more convenient for her, but to make adjustments in her life that will incorporate her children and create opportunities for them. With that vision in mind, Rhonda founded two educational programs: Camp Xander-Well and F.O.C.U.S. (Forget Outside Circumstances Until Success) Academy. Both programs strive to enhance the educational experience by fostering a love for learning created from an atmosphere conducive to multiple learning styles. Rhonda desires for all children to realize the greatness within themselves. Motivated and inspired by her love for hosting, organizing, and planning events, Rhonda founded, A Genie in a Bottle Events, an event planning company that hosts an array of events from weddings and baby showers, to holiday events and various galas. Rhonda’s favorite moments are with her family. Whether it’s pizza and movie night with her boys, Sunday dinner with close friends, or date night with her hubby, Kevin.

Awesome Book!

Sometimes embracing ourselves is one of the most challenging things to do. It’s almost as if we have to fight to be who we truly are because we have been told for so long who we aren't. Rhonda’s words in “Mama I Wanna Be Light-skinned”, are a reminder that we can be victorious in just who we’ve been called to be.

I believe it’s important to admit our weaknesses and to be able to face ourselves and see what’s really there. That’s what this book is about. It’s about honesty. It’s about dealing with insecurity. It’s about learning to accept our unique selves, even when those we love don’t.

"Mama I Wanna Be Light-skinned” goes deeper than complexion. It’s a relatable life journey that expresses what many of us may fear sharing aloud---those deep parts of us that we would rather keep hidden. Rhonda’s story of her own personal battle helps us to see that we’re not alone in our struggles. It’s an anthem of hope for anyone who has been battling with their own identity. Her testimony is a song that will continuously replay in the hearts of men and women everywhere.

Standing "O" and a million for this book!

This book is definitely a must have and read. For the first time in 32 years I read this book in a day and a half. Once you pick it up, it's hard to put it down. It's so touching and relatable. This book will have you looking at yourself in a whole new and positive way. If you, or someone you know have been dealing with self-esteem or self-confidence issues this book will for sure make you change the way you think...It's worth the purchase!

This was such an awesome read! I never imagined that so many young ladies shared the same feelings as Rhonda, until I started to share the book. It was such an inspiration to see how she was able to overcome such personal issues and gain the courage to share them with her readers! I am so ready for the next book to be released! Christian Wolmar is a writer and broadcaster specializing in the social history of railways and transport. His most recent books are The Subterranean Railway, a history of the London Underground, the world's oldest system, and Fire & Steam, the story of Britain's railways.

Wonderful History of the Place of Railroads in History

Like most people, I had no idea how important railroads were to the history of the world. This over-all story of the contributions made by the Iron Horse to civilization and the industrial revolution is fascinating even to somebody like myself who really doesn't know much about trains, but who has always loved traveling on them. I prefer them to travel by automobile or airliners. From this book, it appears that I'm not alone in that love of train travel and it's wonderful to know that railroads are making a big comeback all over the planet. Railroads are still the least expensive way to move freight and raw materials and it appears that they in the process of greatly expanding their role in the economy. This is a very good read and not just for train enthusiasts. The text is accompanied by lots of helpful maps and 16 pages of really interesting photographs both in color and black and white.

An Incredible, Fascinating History of the Creation and Impact of Railroads around the World

For my 100th review, I chose Wolmar's Blood, Iron and Gold. If you are looking for a good, non-fiction, history book that will engage you and give you all sorts of fascinating, interesting insights, Blood, Iron and Gold is just the ticket. I am not a railroad aficianado, yet I found this book hard to put down. It's extremely well written, an easy read, and thoroughly researched. The maps and the two sets of illustrations and photographs convey all the right visuals one needs.

The first part of the book (chapters 1-4) discuss the first railroads (with rails made of wood!), the first steam engines, and their impacts on society, culture, and the political landscape. The way in which railroads have been instrumental in unifying diverse regions is fascinating. I finally understood why we, in the US, have gone from thinking of the various united states as a group of independent, allied political entities to an entire single nation (e.g., it used to be when one said "the Unites States," one used a plural verb as in "the United States are going to..."). Likewise, the same holds true for the very disjointed region - with lots of principalities and countries - that is Germany today. Wolmar very clearly explains how each of these disparate political units had to work closely together to see an ROI on railroad investment.

Part two of the book (chapters 5-10) begins with a continent by continent review of how railways penetrated various nations and the problems involved, from "simple" cross-border coordination activities to massive topographical challenges (the Andes) that even today are staggering in their complexities and tragedies. The section on the attempt to drive a railway through the Amazon is particularly poignant. The last few chapters in part two highlight the many innovations - not only in trains and technology, but also architecture - that railroads led to.

The last third of the book (chapters 11-13) might seem to be a bit of a downer as they discuss the eclipsing of the railroad by planes and automobiles, but luckily, Wolmar ends with an intriguing set of trends pointing toward an already occurring resurgence in railroad travel and use. Certainly, since 9/11 in the US and the rise in gas prices, train travel has become far easier, cheaper, and more enjoyable than the whole airport to airport experience.

Wolmar's book also makes a very subtle, very strong case for the need for high speed trains in the US and Britain. Frankly, it was shameful reading about the progress made by Japan, Italy, Germany, France, and China. As perfect as high speed trains might be for up and down the US coasts, the current Acela is the bottom of the barrel compared to what other nations have been able to achieve even in the last ten years. The fact that I've never seen the Acela less than packed should be a clarion call for politicians and planners in the US.

All of this - and far, far more - Wolmar makes clear in his book. Blood, Iron and Gold is at the top of my non-fiction book list for 2010. It should be on yours as well.

Very highly recommended! Read it!

Nearly everyone today realizes the central importance of the Internet, and how it transformed every aspect of life. I was 34 before the Internet started growing into the ubiquitous central backbone of commerce, finance, business, and social life and I totally embraced it. I was there when it all started in '95, crude as it was.

That gave me an insight in reading this book and how railways literally changed the world back then, long after the Industrial Revolution but before electricity was finally developed. Railroads affected everything then somewhat in the way the Internet does now. The coming of the railroads was, I think, the greatest achievement of the Industrial Revolution, which led to electricity,

Railroad cities across America and the world grew up overnight. Distant markets opened up, Diets changed due to improved transport of foodstuffs. Communications between people and markets were transformed. Commerce grew exponentially; wheat grains and coal and then oil became essential parts of the national commerce.

And not just here in America, but elsewhere. But America's railroad experience was vastly different from the rest of the world's. Here, the railroads were built, financed, and controlled by private business. Elsewhere, Europe especially, governments controlled the railways.

This book is a fair and straightforward account, and has no axe to grind or philosophy to advance. In that, this book stands up without prejudice and tells a very interesting story that most of don't know. Myself included, until now.

Unparalelled Intimacy

Many of the plays in this collection move me greatly-the vision lost in "Krapp's Last Tape", the past's deafening roar(or, dying flame) in "Embers", examinations of self-awareness,memory, and one's ability to express these in "Not I", "That Time" & "A Piece of Monologue", the sadly charming lost Ireland of "All That Fall", the image of a reader literally staring an image of himself in the face while reading a memoir-like first person narative in "Ohio Impromtu". This book contains Beckett's works for theatre, radio, television, film, mimes, which may explain it's seeming unstageability to other readers. Beckett viewed his dramatic works as his break from the serious writing of his prose early in his career("Waiting for Godot" was written as a break between Molloy & Malone Dies), but as he moved on toward silence, Beckett's theatre became the medium in which he achiveed his greatest acclaim & fame. The late dramas of "That Time" & "A Piece of Monologue" anticipate the self-searching confessional style & subject of the Nohow On 'novels', and present investigations of memory, responsibility, self-identity, and expressionability that are moving and profound, as well as being intimate portraits of the individual alone. All of the plays in this collection are powerful documents of intimate moments that question not only what we call theatre but also question how we understand, experience, question & represent our "self"s, our pasts...our "moments". I can think of no other writer who portrays true moments of aloneness, moments of unself-representing(even as these are represented as farcical) so honestly. Depressing? No, these plays are life affirming, in all its breathes and cries, its cycles of memorializing and willful forgetting, its fabrications and its confessional, the blinding light and frightening countenance of the other's gaze, the silence of another's absence. Intimate moments are diverse, and they are represented here without a flinch in all their breadth. No symbols where none intended, Beckett said elsewhere, but are there not other means for expressive art than symbols? "There was a time when I asked myself, What is it./There were times I answered, It's the outing./ Two outings./ Then the return./ Where?/ To the village./ To the inn./ Two outings, then at last the return, to the village, to the inn, by the only road that leads there./ An image, like any other./ But I don't answer any more./ I open"(Cascando). Herein, the opening that constitutes a search for other roads to there.

Extraordinary, but to be taken in doses.

Some advice: although this book contains some of the most astonishing plays ever written, I wouldn't read them all in one go. If you do, doubts might seem to creep in. About how Beckett doesn't really have all that much to say, and became increasingly mannered in his attempts to say it. That his work is really just three variations on basic forms - the Godotesque double act; the old man or woman looking back over a (generally stunted) life; and the pattern plays/mimes. You'll certainly want to rush and read something silly just for a breath of air; there's not much of the vaunted Beckett humour here.
Nevertheless, the collection brims with Beckett's best work - the remorselessly inventive radio play, 'All That Fall'; the sublimely tragic comedy, 'Krapp's Last Tape'; the infernal farce, 'Play'; the deconstruction of nostalgia, 'That Time'; the chamber poignancy of 'Ohio Impromptu'; the great theatrical experiments, 'Footfalls', 'What Where', 'Not I', 'Rockaby', which pushed the language of theatre way past its limits, undermining its boasts of 'live performance' and the functionality of language - in these texts, 'meaning', if there is such a thing, may reside in the stage directions.

Beckett at his best

Beckett gives you a lot in a few lines. His shorter plays are the work of a genius. Poignant as usual and more concise than ever he gives you a lot to think about. I LOVE Not I, Come and Go and many others. The line "f*** life" in Rockaby stands for a lot, really: pity us poor human beings! We ARE doomed.
