About the Author
Alan Dunnett is Visiting Lecturer in Counselling Studies at York St John University, UK, and was formerly head of Counselling studies. He has worked closely the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy as Chair of the Core Curriculum Consortium, and currently participates in debates and decision-making concerning counsellors as a Governor of the BACP.

Caroline Jesper is Senior Lecturer in Counselling Studies at York St John University, UK. She is Programme Director for the Postgraduate Certificate in Counsellor Supervision, and works in private practice in counselling, coaching and supervision. Her areas of specialism include counselling young people and supervision, and she has undertaken research on the impact of dual relationships in counselling supervision.

Maire O'Donnell works in private practice as a supervisor and counsellor, and has over eighteen years experience in her own consultancy, and has assisted in developing supervision, coaching and mentoring programmes. Her present focus is short and long term counselling, supervising students and experienced practitioners, and consultancy to supervisors and trainee supervisors.

Kate Vallance works in private practice as a supervisor, counsellor and consultant. She has her own consultancy company working across private, public and voluntary sectors and consulting on a variety of issues, including stress, career development and providing supervision and coaching. She has experience lecturing in counselling skills and has conducted research into experiences of supervision.

The only book our 10-month old sits still for!

He gets bored with regular old board books, but this one really captures his attention (he'll sit through it 2-3 times in a row!) There are many different animals, so you can use a lot of different voices. Cute illustrations.

This is my 1 year old's favorite book

My 1 year old son got this for his birthday and loved from the first time I read it. He loves "peeking" under the flaps and finding the different animals. The bright colors are wonderful, and this is a nice change from the Board type books we usually read. You can use many voices for the different animals and he has learned the animal sounds from reading this book. It is fabulous and I am going to buy the other ones in the series.

Kaya Abaniah (Kah-yuh Abba-na-yuh) is a boy's name. Kaya Abaniah and the Father of the Forest is a unique story, set in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. In this two-island Caribbean nation, inhabited primarily by people of African and Indian descent, Trinidadian English is the official spoken language, and Standard English is the official written language. However, Kaya speaks authentic Trinidadian Creole, which is similar, but distinct from Tobagonian Creole. Trinbagonians (Trinidadians and Tobagonians) use Creole in spontaneous conversation, while Trinidadian English is often reserved for more formal speech. Brings Fantasy into Reality

There is so much I can tell you about this book. The bad thing is, though, I would be spoiling it. So I'll sum up everything.

I am not used to books being filled with extensive material on a country or culture, period. These days, authors skim over those important details to engage the reader instead of take the time in their story to teach them new facts about a foreign country you've probably never been too nor thought of visiting. This book taught me a lot about the country and culture in the two island Caribbean nation of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

Anyways this is the story about fourteen year old Kaya (Hezekiah) Abaniah who lives with his single mother Josephine. He goes to college which is different considering he is only fourteen but I would assume it is just like high school. At face value, he is an ordinary boy until he starts hearing a voice in his head, guiding him which leads him to saving his crush, Raima Kahn, from drowning. After that, he began to experience sudden changes like telepathy and the ability to have control over animals.

This books keep you drawn in, wanting more and more to the very end. I recommend it for young adults, teenagers, and also adults who are interested in reading something original and new instead of rehashed story lines. This one is fantastic and you will not be disappointed.

Trotman's Talent Lies in His Descriptive Word Choice

Kaya Abaniah and the Father of the Forest by Wayne Gerard Trotman delves into several themes of friendship, family, bullying, and wildlife conservation. Kaya Abaniah is a typical fourteen-year-old boy. He and his mother live on the island of Trinidad. Kaya attends a local school where is close friends with Tom and Raima. He has frequent run-ins with a group of bullies. All is as it should be until strange things begin to happen. The strange things occur when Kaya is ill with a fever and hears a man tell him to watch his food and what he eats. Then Kaya can read minds and perform tasks with above normal ability. Kaya, Tom, and Raima encounter danger on a school trip and meet who they believe is Papa Bois, the father of the forest. Kaya learns his own father’s identity and becomes a student of a group of characters from Trinidadian mythology.

Trotman, a native of Trinidad, brings his personal knowledge of Trinidadian culture to the book. The novel explores the animals, food, and religion of the island in great detail. Trotman relies on his experiences to create likeable characters who grow as the plot progresses. The reader learns a great deal about Trinidad, its animals, and food and culture in great detail.

The ideas and themes of the story are very focused and well-developed. The organization is easy to follow. Trotman’s real talent is in descriptive word choice. The story navigates between Standard English and Trinidad Creole. The dialogue moves the plot forward.

The novel is intended for young adults; I recommend high school as there are violence and some suggestion of typical high school flirtations and sexual innuendoes. The Creole dialect and slang do require close reading to understand the characters. I read the book in about five hours. My verdict? Fans of Percy Jackson and Harry Potter will love this original story steeped in tradition and culture.

True Legends

I liked this novel from the start, and for a number of reasons. When I taught summer school in Jamaica for more than ten seasons, I looked everywhere for books such as Kaya Abaniah, and couldn't find very many, if any. The reason? People are generally reluctant to say more than a few words about the old stories told by granny & c. Some think they're quaint, cute or merely aphoristic, good for a couple of laughs. But to find a serious work like Kaya Abaniah, you really had to look far and wide. So here is the bottom line on this excellent book for young readers -- it is the real thing. If you like the idea of Papa Bois, the Father of the Forest and you actually believe such a thing could be true, or perhaps was true, historically, during a time when mythologies were the sacred history of a people, then this novel is for you. It is not a fantasy, nor is it written like one. While you are following the storytline, you may also pick up a lot of useful information about the culture of Trinidad and Tobago. For instance, I have had sorrel wine but I did not know that it was as old as ancient Egypt. Mr. Trotman explains that it comes from hibiscus and is good for "the pressure", as they say in Jamaica. Bob Marley said, "Everything has a season, find its reason." And that's what this excellent novel does -- it tells you the reason behind things. Did you know that the Father of the Forest was yet another incarnation of the Greek god Pan? Maybe you did, but did you know that Pan and the word "panic" are brethren? Makes sense, doesn't it. When magic is explored, not as delirious mayhem, but as a kind of "science", it is so-called black magic. But, I believe, we need more magic of all kinds today, especially the kind Wayne Gerard Trotman offers in this novel of myths and legends that come across as probable and true.

The back-story to the "Jesus in India" movie

This text takes the reader through the fascinating and inspiring journey that was the production of the movie, Jesus in India by Paul Davids staring Edward T. Martin.

The book explains how the project came about, how the guests appearing in the movie were contacted and visited. It gives first hand accounts of the incredible obstacles and challenges faced by the team in producing the film. The challenges ranged from religious sentiment and censorship to the roasting Indian climate during the summer. The topic is a large one and the 97 minute film packs in a lot of material, but a companion book is essential to allow a proper study of this area. We get to read more about the interviews that did and did not make it in to the final cut of the movie. We read about interviews with Aziz Kashmiri, how the interview with the Shankaracharya was arranged, requests for interviews with the Dali Lama etc.

For me the most fascinating section of the book was the account of the journey to visit the Rozabal Tomb, the alleged tomb of Jesus. The reader gets a true sense of the dangers involved and the precautions the team had to take in order to visit and shoot this key piece in the puzzle.

Overall a thoroughly enjoyable book. For those who have not seen the movie the book still presents a wonderful story, with key quotes and dialogue from the movie included. For those that have it gives important background information that will raise your appretiation of the movie to another level.

About the author

Anthony Bolton left Cambridge University with a degree in engineering to begin a career in the City. He started as a graduate trainee working for Keyser Ullmann in 1971 before taking up a full time position as an assistant in their investment department. In 1976 he moved to Schlesingers where he became, for the first time, an investment manager. In 1979, aged 29, he was recruited by Fidelity, the international fund management group, as one of its first London-based investment managers, a move that proved to be the launch of a long and successful career. In surveys of professional investors, he is regularly voted the fund manager most respected by his peers. He retired from full-time investment management at the end of 2007, but continues to work at Fidelity as a mentor of the analysts and younger fund managers as well as being involved in overseeing Fidelity’s investment process. His hobby is composing classical music. Anthony Bolton is married with three children and lives in West Sussex.

One of the most successful European investors

Most of us know of several successful US managers, but when it comes to European managers it's much more difficult. The author of this book is one of the most successful European investors, Anthony Bolton, who very successfully managed several Fidelity funds between 1979 and 2007. The foreword of the book is written by Peter Lynch, the American legend, whom which Bolton has worked with and shares a lot of investing principles with. The author's quotes from various friends/legends are all American, like Bill Miller (whose tenure at Leg Mason ended in tears), Jeremy Grantham and Warren Buffet.

The book is divided into three parts. The first part presents 17 principles (in 17 very short chapters) on how to run money. Bolton tells you his views on everything from company meetings to what personal traits a successful money manager should have. This is the best part of the book, where you actually can get the key point of the book by reading just chapters 1, 2, 6, 8, 9 and 12. The second part is more about his reflections from a life of running money and the third and final part is a shortlist on everything you should remember after reading the book.

Anthony Bolton writes very in an easy language and the book can easily be read in a day or during a long flight. Some might think it's too simple and yes, there are a lot of things that others have talked extensively about, but I appreciate most of his comments and I think most will find something that improves his or hers work in this industry. The book is a pleasure to read and Mr Bolton shares his experiences in a light way and has plenty to give.

There are a few chapters that I really like. Chapter 4, on sentiment is one. Here he observes the need to keep an open mind. "Once we buy shares we become less open to the idea that our decision to buy was wrong. We close our mind to evidence that doesn't confirm our initial thesis" and "investors underestimate the likelihood of rare events happening when they haven't happened recently and overestimates them when they just have."

Chapter 16 is another great part. In just 2 pages he writes what to do when you are not doing well. (I am myself thinking of writing an entire book about this at some point since it's a fascinating topic.) Everyone in this industry, or private investors, will sooner or later have problems (witness Bill Gross and John Paulson's performance in 2011 for example). Just like athletes who are out of form, you need a reset, and your ability to deal with this is critical.

You should not read this book if you have read a lot of investment books and want to learn new things as most of his thoughts have been written extensively by others. In fact you could argue it`s just a rehash of a lot of things others have said better. However, you should read this book if you want an easy to read introduction to financial literature, or are curious on how one of Europe's most successful investors did it. The latter reason is good enough for me.

As a final note, after retiring in 2007, Bolton decided to move to China and start a new fund in 2010, Fidelity China Special Situation. He had at this point decided that there were so many opportunities in China that he had to go there. The China fund had a good start, +30%, but then almost halved and he is lagging his benchmark badly. Now, for the first time, he is highly questioned, with limited use of his old track record of taking an investment of 1 pound to 148 pounds in 28 years in his old fund, Fidelity UK Special Situations. I personally hope he turns it around, and writes another book about that specific experience.

A Money Manager's Memoir

The book is written as a money manager's memoir. In the book, Anthony Bolton shares some of his experience and wisdom, which is good if you are an active money manager. For most of us, how to set up and prepare for interviews with the companies or how to assess the credit risk of the companies using H-score (the modern day version of Z-score) means little. This is because we either do not have access to the information or do not use that particular investment process. There is little hard knowledge we can learn from the book. Most of the chapters are too short and not deep enough on the subject. The chapter on sentiment or the chapter on technical analysis touches the subject, but you will not know what to do afterward. This is very different from what I picked up from Mebane Faber and Eric Richardson's "The Ivy Portfolio". Their approach is highly actionable. Not so for Bolton. Despite that, the book is still a book worth reading as we can pick up some of the mindset and strategic approach of a highly successful active investment manager.

A great story book for a few!

This isn't a book for average amateur investors as the author assumes a great deal of financial knowledge and market fluency from the perspective readers. I like Anthony Bolton's Memoir: Investing Against the Tide: Lessons From a Life Running Money because this was fun to read. I have a positive bias to value-oriented investors whose main focus often is on great business franchises and abilities to generate cash flow. Anthony had been in the middle of institutionalizing investing scene in the Europe for over 3 decades. As a pioneer, Anthony definitely deserves a special place in the ranks of legendary investors along with Buffett, Peter Lynch, Seth Klarmin, or late Philip Fisher. I also must admit that he was very lucky to spend his prime years as an investor when the Western Europe markets were acting as "emerging markets" from the US investor's perspective. Going through rapid development of more sophisticated equity capital markets and the shareholder friendly corporate governance, he had maximized his chances by being a good fundamental guy with savvy technical skills.

This could have been remarkably more interesting and insightful if he had gone into more details in case studies for professional investors. Often times, he kept everything too simple and short in order to expand the scope of readers able to handle this material but I don't his efforts to simplicity may have produced a product that has lost its place a bit.

Excited about Reading!!

I would characterize this book, and others in the series, as great choices for reluctant readers (esp. boys as the market sometimes seems to inundate us with books that are geared more towards girls), because it presents like a combination chapter book-magazine-comic; and the facts/trivia and historical notes included are terrific, too! I would further note that it is great not just for reluctant readers, but for book-lovers as well: My 6-year-old son loves to read anything, including chapter books, short stories, comics, magazines.... His favorites are usually funny stories like this book! Having listened to parts of another Geronimo Stilton book, read aloud by his sister a year or two ago, I could tell he'd like them when he got to the point of reading on his own. I was right!! He laughed out loud throughout this book, and wanted to keep reading it outside of his regular 'reading time!' I cannot wait to get him more of the titles in this great series!

"i, geronimo stilton, am not a big fan of spooky things. but when stilton cheese began disappearing during my trip to england, i had to do something that cheese and i shared the saME NAME, AFTER ALL. COULD I FIND THE MYSTERIOUS CHEESE THIEF, OF WAS I IN FOR A BIG SCARE PUTRID CHEESE PUFFS, WHAT AN ADVENTURE..... a great adventure and mystery. i liked it alot."
