Tocqueville, Democracy, and Religion: Checks and Balances for Democratic Souls, by Alan S. Kahan

The relationship between democracy and religion is as important today as it was in Alexis de Tocqueville's time. Tocqueville, Democracy, and Religion is a ground-breaking study of the views of the greatest theorist of democracy writing about one of today's most crucial problems. Alan S. Kahan, one of today's foremost Tocqueville scholars, shows how Tocqueville's analysis of religion is simultaneously deeply rooted in his thoughts on nineteenth-century France and America and pertinent to us today.

Tocqueville thought that the role of religion was to provide checks and balances for democracy in the spiritual realm, just as secular forces should provide them in the political realm. He believed that in the long run secular checks and balances were dependent on the success of spiritual ones. Kahan examines how Tocqueville thought religion had succeeded in checking and balancing democracy in America, and failed in France, as well as observing Tocqueville's less well-known analyses of religion in Ireland and England, and his perspective on Islam and Hinduism. He shows how Tocqueville's 'post-secular' account of religion can help us come to terms with religion today.

More than a study of Tocqueville on religion in democratic society, this volume offers us a re-interpretation of Tocqueville as a moralist and a student of human nature in democratic society; a thinker whose new political science was in the service of a new moral science aimed at encouraging democratic people to attain greatness as human beings. Tocqueville, Democracy, and Religion gives us a new Tocqueville for the twenty-first century.

Tocqueville's Prescription for "Make America Great"
By GDP
'Tocqueville, Democracy, and Religion' (TDR) is a valuable book, as it helps the lay reader better appreciate Tocqueville's masterpiece, 'Democracy in America' (DA) by focusing intensely on Tocqueville's views on religion, particularly his view that religion is an important element in American democracy's potential to foster "human greatness." In fact, it is fair to say that Tocqueville was a moralist chiefly concerned with "human greatness" made possible via the potentially complimentary influences of religion and democracy.

To achieve his insightful commentary, Prof. Kahan culls and reweaves Tocqueville's references on religion from DA and other works, including correspondence. Commentary on religion appears throughout DA, sometimes in chapters with headings that specifically reference religion, but many that are found sprinkled about in chapters that don't and, therefore, are not obvious places to turn for related content (granted, there are indices available).

Tocqueville wrote extensive observations about what he saw in America (c. 1830), but perhaps his most important observation was that the future of democracy in America offered "alternative moral outcomes" (p. 13); that is, it could become a democracy that fostered 'human greatness' or a democracy that encouraged human degradation. In the tradition of Pascal, Tocqueville believed that man consisted of two parts, angel and beast, or idealism and material desires (p. 27), and that "human greatness" required a balance between the angel and the beast.

The book pretty thoroughly explores the topic while remaining objective … it is not an apologia or a tract by any means. This posture is entirely appropriate since Tocqueville's own posture on religion was that of an instrument, or an institution that had a tendency to benefit human beings in the here and now (by imposing ethical duties) without regard for the ultimate truth of faith. In addition to commentary on religion in America, it covers a comparison with religion in France (where religion's benefits had been more complicated because it had been so intertwined with economic and political power), as well as discussion of what Tocqueville considered secular alternatives to religion that could also foster "human greatness."

One mild criticism: for all of Tocqueville's (and Kahan's) fixation upon "human greatness" (or "human grandeur") there never is a satisfactory definition of what Tocqueville exactly meant by the term provided in TDR. It is hinted at … freedom, the exercise of free will, moral excellence, virtue, "old ideas of heroism and bravado, of magnanimity, of devotion and of ideal love" (p. 21), justice, "real virtue" (p. 60), "the great and the beautiful" (p. 62), "moderation" (p. 68), et cetera. We could easily add to the list prudence, discipline, faith, hope, and charity. So it is easy to conjure an idea of what Tocqueville might have meant, but it would be helpful to have a more precise definition for Tocqueville's use of the term based upon scholarly understanding.

This is an edifying and worthwhile read both for historical understanding and the present.

A complimentary book is Joshua Mitchell's The Fragility of Freedom: Tocqueville on Religion, Democracy, and the American Future that covers much of the same ground but uses many different DA citations and provides some additional context for Tocqueville's moral philosophy (also four stars).

Framed: Tales Of The Art Underworld, by Tod Volpe

Tod Volpe had more than an excellent eye for art. His gift of the gab took him from a start-up gallery in New York's Soho into the houses, lives and wallets of stars including Jack Nicholson, Barbra Streisand, Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Andy Warhol and Madonna. bra Appearing to live the American Dream, his high-maintenance, wheeler-dealer lifestyle became a dark path to self-destruction. At the height of his success, Volpe crashed and burned in a widely publi-cised case of art fraud. Represented by top attorneys Nathan and Alan Dershowitz (of Klaus Von Bulow trial fame), his story made international headlines and threatened to blow the lid off the secret world of art dealing. With behind-the-scenes coverage, the book gives an insight into how auctions and dealers manoeuvre art around the globe. Money laundering, trading art with drug dealers, avoiding tax, and making false insurance claims are only a taste of what is revealed as the seedier side of the art world is laid bare. Framed is a fascinatingblow-by-blow account of how the life of one man who 'had it all' spiralled out of control. Volpe learned the hard way that when you lose sight of who you really are nothing in the world.

Review
"I met Brian Patton and Bart Robinson in the summer of 1970 when I was working as a mountain guide at Lake O'Hara and Brian and Bart showed up in the valley doing their initial research for what was to become the iconic "Trail Guide to the Canadian Rockies". The pair was walking every trail in the range, notebook in hand, pushing a measuring wheel and noting all the distances. This, I am sure, is the only time that this has ever been done and I feel comfortable in saying that every guidebook author since, has used Brian and Bart's trail distances. Their book is the original and, in my opinion, still the best." --Chic Scott

About the Author

Great for descriptions, poor for planning
By mattyboy549
I contemplated giving this book 3 stars but I felt that would be unfair. My partner and I are making our first visit to the Canadian Rockies this summer. Being an obsessive vacation planner, I devour any and all resources I can find to settle on a detailed itinerary. When I received this book, I went from being beyond excited for all the gorgeous hikes we would embark on to beyond overwhelmed with how I would ever decide which hikes were must-dos with a limited amount of time. This is my biggest dilemma with this guide. It is a fantastic source for detailed trail descriptions. Hundreds of trail descriptions. It is a pretty lousy source for helping you decide which trails are really the stand-outs. I'm well aware that you can hop online and get an unlimited number of opinions regarding what's not to miss. That's all well and good but I would rather have the opinion of Brian Patton and Bart Robinson, two guys that have hiked it all. What they have penned is an invaluable resource for the traveler that has already decided which trails they are going hike. For that, it deserves four stars. If like me you are attempting to plan a trip to a destination you have never been before, I would look elsewhere (at least to begin with). My suggestion is The Best Day Hikes in the Canadian Rockies by Tim Jensen. I don't regret purchasing this book but given that this was the first guide I purchased for the area, I was completely overwhelmed. If the authors happen to read this, for future editions of this book please give us a top 20 or some type of rating system. We want your opinions!

Detailed guide, but difficult to use a resource for finding the best hikes
By DSE
A detailed description and standard reference guide for the Canadian Rockies, but I did not find it very helpful as a vacationer looking for a single-reference best guide to recreational hikes. The Canadian Rockies cover a lot of territory, so you can spend a lot of time driving to a trail head, which eats into hiking time, so hike selection is critical. We needed a guide that suggested the best hikes in the area, but this guide lacks easy-to-use ratings in terms of difficulty and scenery, which makes hike selections difficult. While the trail descriptions were good in terms of elevation gains and distances, I would also prefer more detailed maps so I don;t need to bring a topo map.

I do think this is a great reference for residents of -- and frequent visitors to -- the Canadian Rockies, but less helpful for vacationing families with limited time trying to find the best area hikes.

Great encyclopedia, but unhelpful with finding great trails
By Tom Jones
This book is a great reference with 229 trails throughout the parks of the Canadian Rockies. If you've already selected a trail, it's great.

However, it's not great for planning an itinerary. I bought this book a couple of months in advance of a 10-day trip to the region, hoping to find two great 3-day hikes that we could plan the rest of our trip around. I soon discovered the Achilles' heel of this book--there are no ratings. In order to see how good a hike is, you have to read about it. In order to find the most desirable hikes in the book, I'd have to read more than 400 pages! I actually tried this, and started to read from the beginning, making notes about which hikes seemed particularly interesting--and then decided to check out the other books that are available. I immediately found "Don't Waste Your Time in the Canadian Rockies" by Kathy and Craig Copeland, which readily classifies trails into categories based on how scenic and pleasant they are. From that book, I rapidly found some great trails, and planned our itinerary.

Imagine a book filled with essays about hundreds of movies, but no ratings. It would be great for understanding more about a movie you had already chosen, but not very helpful for choosing a movie. So it is with this encyclopedic work--if you've already decided where you're hiking, or have narrowed it down to a few possibilities, this books is great. But there are much better choices if you're planning a wide-open itinerary and want to find the best places to go.

A new path to the waterfall : last poems, by Raymond. Carver

When Raymond Carver died in 1988, America lost one of its great writers. His characters, usually working-class people, often waged an inner, seemingly passive battle with life. Their triumph-and Carver's brilliance-shone in the communicative potential that his people found in themselves when trouble ruled. It was with poetry that Carver began his literary career. His final book, A New Path to the Waterfall, reflects mostly the last things to occupy him, so irresolution is acutely present. There is foreboding mixed with acceptance, suddenness courting eventuality, fear and hope holding hands. Farewell is uppermost, a door closing softly. Tess Gallagher, who was Carver's companion for 11 years and wife during the final months, describes in an affecting introductory essay their collaboration in arranging these poems. Raymond Carver, author of Where I'm Calling From, is widely considered one of the great short story writers of our time. A New Path to the Waterfall was Carver's last book, and shows a writer telling the truth as best as he knows how in the time left to him. The sixty-odd poems in this collection are linked by Carver with selections from other writers, most notably Chekhov, whose work was an inspiration and a guide, and by the cumulative force of the life and death questions he poses in them. As Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet guided countless readers discovering their true love and work, Carver's book will guide those in the process of celebrating a limited life and mourning the inescapable end of it. A New Path to the Waterfall is an essential book for those who admire Carver's work, and testament to the transcendent strength of the human spirit. In her introductory essay, Tess Gallagher, Carver's companion and fellow writer, lays out the circumstances of their last years together with matter-of-fact grace.

The last poems . . .
By Ronald Scheer
This was Raymond Carver's 11th and apparently last book of poems, published after his death by his wife Tess Gallagher, who writes a long, thoughtful introduction describing Carver's last months before dying of cancer at age 50. Unlike his previous collection, "Where Water Comes Together With Other Water," this book has a number of poems that are more dream-like and surreal, the references not always easy to grasp. There are story poems that resemble the characters and situations in his short stories. And there are brief selections from the writings and poems of Anton Chekhov, Czeslaw Milosz, and others, which provide an allusive context of ideas and images for Carver's own poems.

There is the usual melancholy and awareness of death in these poems, made more riveting by the knowledge of the poet's awareness of his own approaching death. Reading his words and apprehending the emotions they convey, you find yourself treasuring deeply your own living moments - all of them, ordinary or extraordinary as they may be.

The poems are variations on related themes, ideas and observations captured and rendered in a wide variety of moods. There is sad bitterness in a poem about his son, "On an Old Photograph Of My Son." There are memories of boyhood in Yakima and a memoir-like fragment in "Some Prose on 'Poetry'," describing a stranger's gift of poetry books to him at an impressionable age. "His Bathrobe Pockets Stuffed With Notes" is a playful catalog of random thoughts entertained and then dismissed as "horsing around." Another poem, rich with evocative detail, illustrates the creative process, "The Painter & the Fish." There are love poems, a sadly humorous poem about his toes, and a poem about the excesses of Alexander the Great.

It's a fine book, a great reminder of things that really matter - of living the dwindling days wholeheartedly.

'' beloved on the earth"
By Shalom Freedman
This is Raymond Carver's last collection of poems. It was put together with the help of the love and companion of the last eleven years of his life, the writer Tess Gallagher. She also includes a long introduction to the work explaining the process of the book's making.

Carver is a poet of directness, simplicity, emotional courage. His poems are often stories built around direct observations or statements of his present mood, a mood that is also reflective on other times of life. The poems which I believe are most moving often have to do with relationships, with his father, with his former wife, with his children.

His world is often a disordered and painful one, the alcoholic's world , the world of those in debt and down. But there is in him almost always a redemptive appreciation of life, a certain hidden joy and emotional surprise which gives the poems their special life.

Among the beautiful poems of this work is one called 'Cherish' in which he tells of the tenderness in his relationship with Tess Gallagher.

I was very moved by the last poem , a fragment that sums up the man and the redemptive power of his work.

LATE FRAGMENT

And did you get what

you wanted from this life, even so?

I did.

And what did you want?

To call myself beloved, to feel myself

beloved on the earth.

The Style is the Man
By Dorion Sagan
Raymond Carver, whom I had the fortuitous pleasure of having lunch with, along with his girfriend Tess Gallagher, a couple of years before he died, was a true artist. Emily Dickinson puts poets above the sun and God in pantheon of what's most important, and people like Raymond Carver prove her right. Although this last offering by the 20th century's greatest minimalist writer is neither his greatest nor his most minimal, it strikes the same generous chord of longing, of heart warming simplicity and heart breaking honesty, that Carver strikes elsewhere. The style is the man, wrote Buffon (in French), and sure enough that is the case here: a style of simple emotional honesty, combined with an artist's experimental will to playfulness, sufffused with a hope whose transcendent beauty is precisely its distillation from the undoctored elements of ordinary reality. This book, enhanced and completed by Tess Gallagher's wonderfully loving but unsentimental introduction, shows Carver at the end of his life; still excited about art, and the possibility of the poem form, he splices lines from Chekov stories, giving them titles and thereby
transforming them into poem epigraphs to his own measured prose. The transformation of the Chekov short story to the Carver poem perhaps underscores the poetic process itself, whittling down reality into its artistic essence--the process so aptly demonstrated by Carver, who never wrote a novel, in his short stories. As Salmon Rushdie says on the cover (I paraphrase), read this book by Carver. Read everything by Carver. Raymond Carver was a great writer.

The Burgermeister's Daughter: Scandal in a Sixteenth-Century German Town, by Steven Ozment

In an era when women were supposed to be disciplined and obedient, Anna proved to be neither. Defying 16th-century social mores, she was the frequent subject of gossip because of her immodest dress and flirtatious behavior. When her wealthy father discovered that she was having secret, simultaneous affairs with a young nobleman and a cavalryman, he turned her out of the house in rage, but when she sued him for financial support, he had her captured, returned home and chained to a table as punishment. Anna eventually escaped and continued her suit against her father, her siblings and her home town in a bitter legal battle that was to last 30 years and end only upon her death.

Drawn from her surviving love letters and court records, The Burgermeister's Daughter is a fascinating examination of the politics of sexuality, gender and family in the 16th century, and a powerful testament to the courage and tenacity of a woman who defied the inequalities of this distant age.

Amazon.com Review
The tragic but uplifting story of Anna Buschler, whose rebellion against the constricting mores of her times is reconstructed in this vivid social portrait of Germany at the end of the Middle Ages.

From Publishers Weekly
Ozment (Protestants: The Birth of a Revolution) brings a medieval drama to life in this meticulously researched and engrossing narrative of the 30-year lawsuit between Anna Buschler (1496/98-1552) and her family. Anna's father, Burgermeister (mayor) of the German town of Schwabisch Hall, banished his daughter from the family home in 1525 after he read letters that confirmed her sexual involvement with two men. Anna responded by suing her father, and after his death her siblings, for disinheriting her. Ozment details the twists and turns of Anna's legal battle, which continued during her two marriages and resulted in her being shackled to a table for six months by her father and later jailed briefly by the town council. She escaped from both incarcerations. Although Anna was promiscuous, Ozment convincingly argues that the Burgermeister's treatment was overly severe, and Anna emerges in this account as an unusually resourceful and feisty woman. Illustrated. History Book Club selection.

From Scientific American
Compelling, suspenseful, and "sexy," the story provides a driving narrative that brings into intimate contact disparate kinds of Reformation history--intellectual, political, and social--weaving them into a single text, impossible to put down. . . .

Intriguing Topic - Poor Representation
By Xoe Li Lu
Steven Ozment has managed to take an intriguing subject - the sordid (and true) affairs of a 16th century Burgermeister's daughter - and make it as dull and unreadable as possible. I concur with other Amazon reviewers who stated that Ozment's writing and research are both deeply flawed. His account of the willful and oft-unfairly treated Anna Bueschler could be a fascinating commentary on 16th century German history, social mores, family and romantic relationships, politics and the role of women in society. Instead, Ozment neglects all of these possibilities and focuses on the most mundane aspects of Bueschler's case, and does so poorly at that. Events are discussed out of order, sources are thrown about haphazardly, and the wonderful surviving letters that relate to Anna Bueschler are not used to their best advantage. The author repeats the same themes over and over throughout the book, while never really making any progress in his analysis of Anna's situation. The book reads like a bad high school textbook. It is a shame that such a fascinating and strong-willed historical figure has been treated so unjustly by Ozment (as she often was in life by her peers!). Perhaps another more-organized historian will take up the case of Anna Bueschler and do right by her.

Love, Religion, Sex, Greed, and Germans--Can't Be Beat!!
By Daniel A. Stone
There are few stretches of the imagination by which Anna Büschler can be called typical of her time and place. First, she was a member of the embryonic bürger urban middle class in a society that was overwhelmingly rural and peasant. Secondly, she had the audacity consistently, and vocally, to defy authority. And finally, but most importantly by the standards that early modern historians, there is actually a fairly large record of what she did and what historian Steven Ozment argues was the consuming passion of her life: undoing the wrong done to her by her father disinheriting her in 1527. Through Ozment's interweaving of the social, political, and legal minefield which Anna was forced to navigate in her attempt to redress the wrong done to her by her father--an extremely interesting man in his own write--after he found a cache of love letters she both wrote and received. The reader is also given a bird's eye view into the workings of a fairly typical German town during the renaissance, Swabian Hall, and how its residents felt about the operation of the legal system in her regards. This is micro-history at its best.

Anna Büschler should have been able to enjoy as comfortable a life as a middle class woman was able to have by sixteenth century standards by the time she was thirty years old. Instead, she found herself locked in her father's home, perpetually chained to a table leg. The chain of events that led her to this unhappy situation begins with interpretations of her past behavior. By her father's account, the legendary bürgermeister of Hall who had twenty years before brazenly petitioned the Holy Roman Emperor on behalf of the common people of Hall, the sexual relationships she had with a member of the local nobility and a mercenary were enough for him to label her as poisonous snake--imbued with the moral character of a whore. By her interpretation, she behaved as she did because her father had shirked his paternal duties and had not found a suitable suitor for her. After escaping from his clutches, Anna began a quarter century long fight to be compensated for the wrong he had done to her which would ultimately climax with the large cross section of Hall society which knew her interpreting her actions.

Ozment's brilliance lies in how he explains Anna's behaviors in the light of sixteenth century moral and legal norms. While Anna was cavorting with her lovers, she was also playing with fire hot enough to consume her completely, and thoroughly burn her father's reputation. By modern standards, and the standards of several centuries preceding the sixteenth, the punishments for premarital sex were draconian in their treatment of the people who engaged in it. Furthermore, the reputations, and often livelihoods, of parents who were exposed as having promiscuous children could be completely destroyed by their behavior. These facts go a long way in describing the extremity of Hermann Büschler's initial banishment of his daughter from his home and then a bold, brazen, and extralegal kidnapping of her after she began legal proceedings against her father. What it does not explain is why a man with such large reputation takes such an action when he certainly had a political future to think about. Ozment thankfully does not dwell on the possibility of incestuous behavior between the two of them because he can not marshal the evidence for any such argument, but it is a question that he nonetheless raises.

Throughout the narrative, Anna rightly comes of as rebellious, strong willed, and nonconformist in her behaviors. But, it is after she escapes from her father's imprisonment that the metal of her character becomes the most visible. She constantly and consistently fought against the marginalization which her disinheritance and her status as a woman imposed upon in every venue that she could gain a hearing in--even initially receiving a 5,000 gulden judgment against the city of Hall for its allowing her to be kept captive in her father's home under extremely suspect circumstances. Though this judgment would be overturned upon appeal and would have to spend the rest of her life fighting in the courts gain any of the money which she felt entitled to--and then only after she had found husbands who were willing to represent her and follow her through the murky recesses of 16th German law. Though only to a limited degree, Anna's story shows that women were not completely at the mercy of men during what is being increasingly regarded as one of the nadirs of women's status in the European history. As the court records which Ozment musters show though, Anna was not the only one, male or female, who questioned this status at least with regard to her.

A retelling of Anna's story to the degree which Ozment was capable would not have been possible were it not for the fact that dozens of her letters between her lovers and herself as well as the depositions from the legal proceedings she used had not survived to the present. In this respect, Ozment has a leg up on other early modern historians because of a relative cornucopia of evidence. Where the extremely good micro-historical biographies written by Natalie Z. Davis and Carlo Ginzburg ultimately have to invoke some very imaginative connections to close their works, Ozment simply does not. For that reason alone he deserves to be read.

A Superb Study of a Sixteenth-century ... Scandal
By K Scheffler
The Burgermeister's Daughter is a fascinating and highly readable study of a ... scandal that errupted in the German city of Schwabish Hall during the early years of the Reformation. The central figure, Anne Buschler, the daughter of a former Burgermeister and long-time city councilman, was a girl who liked to test the limits and would often have tongues wagging over her--for that day and age, at least--wild behaviour. It came to the point where she was having intimate relations with two guys, Erasmus of Limpurg and Daniel Treutwein. When this was discovered by her father, he disinherited her; but instead of allowing herself to be cast adrift in this manner, she fought back and thus ensued a protracted legal battle against her father, and, after his death, her siblings. In the end, we are presented with an extra-ordinary glimpse into the lives of (upper class) Germans during this era, German culture and society, the status of women, and the intricacies of the German legal system. It's a rare treat to find a book that is so meticulously researched but so readable. Highly recommended.

Suprised and highly entertained
By Solomon Payne
I had followed this mini series when it was coming out in individual issues, and liked it. That was nearing 4 years ago however, and I had lost all hope of them putting a TPB together.

Until one fateful day I was down in L.A. visiting my bro, when what did I see? THIS! I was shocked, and also highly alarmed. Alarmed that no mention had been made on almost anything, and it came out totally under the radar.
Not a great way of letting Robotech fans know.

Anyway, this has all of the mini-series issues, plus some reworked artwork, rewritten dialogue, and many new pages of artwork to better flesh out the story. This is the definitive version of PtTSC, pick it up and support any other releases of the older wildstorm RT comics!

Revising a poorly written story... and still leaving it poor.
By Cray-Zee Asian
Where to begin? Robotech was not my first introduction into Japanese anime, however, it was still well, within my "developmental" years. I loved Robotech. I thought it was clever of Carl Macek to combine three separate stories and reimage them into something American viewer would comsume and come to enjoy. Although the "Second Generation" regarding the Army of the Southern Cross was the weakest link in the chain (It was also very weak in the original Japanese storyline), the series as a whole was captivating and compelling.

Then nothing. Several year passed and still nothing. Then rumors of a sequel. Then the release of a pilot episode! "Robotech II - The Sentinels!" Then more nothing. "The Sentinels" was a huge disappointment. It wasn't that the series was stillborn that disappointed me. The story was ridiculously stupid. I, along with my fellow Robotech / Macross fans, wanted to see the Zentradi homeworld, the Robotech masters' empire, the Invid homeworld, and watch the Robotech Expeditionary Forces take the fight to them!

Instead, we ended up with mediocre invasion of the Robotech Masters' homeworld by a sect of the Invid, some new villians, an a collection of aliens ranging from overgrown carebears to scantly clad amazon warrior women. I have nothing against scantly clad amazons. I rather like them, but for some reason, they just didn't fit into what I thought the Robotech universe should be like. It felt like the writers were trying to fit a bad story, made worse, by sponsors that were more concerned about selling action figures of multiple alien races, and appeal to teenaged boys in the midst of hormonal rage.

The original Robotech was fresh, new, different from American cartoons. Character development, story plots and subplots were often subtle. It made you think (at least for a few seconds). Robotech II seemed too American. It bashed you over the heads with the good guys being good and the bad guys were really, really bad. It was formulaic. Did the original Robotech follow fomula storytelling? Sure. The hero did get the girl. The bad guys were defeated, but they weren't so bad after all, at least most of them. But, sometimes, the hero girl didn't get her guy in the end. The hero made a mess of his personal life. Politics got in the way of military decisions. Military decisions got in the way of personal life. Good friends died. Victory wasn't always total.

Robotech II seemed to have completely miss the character development part and the subtleties of storytelling, was tossed on the trash heap of anime history, never to be seen again. and no one seemed to have missed it much.

Then, after more than a decade of essentially nothing, Tommy Yune steps on to the scene with Jason and John Waltrip. Jason and John Waltrip had a pretty good run with a good story in "Malcontents", and they did a good jobs, as best as can be expected, from the "Sentinels" story, both in comic book form. It doesn't take much, but it is obvious that Yune and both Waltrips love Robotech.

Unfortunately, they could not shake the malaise that Carl Macek and the writting duo that made up Jack McKinney (James Luceno and Brian Daley), left for them, especially in the Sentinel series of paperback books. With the passing of Brian Daley, James Luceno was left to spin his wheels in the mud of a bad concept and his own delusional ideas of what a space-military-government organization was supposed to be like, and what the original characters of Robotech were growing to become.

The Shadow Chronicles was a good attempt and rewritting the outcome of the Sentinels. The look and the feel were more in line to what we had come to expect from Robotech, but it was still too deeply entrenched in the foul soil of the Sentinels. Everyone who was left hanging at the end of Third Generation's Symphony of Light episode still had the same question: "What the ***expletive deleted*** happened to Rick Hunter?!!!"

We got a new enemy (Yay! More new enemies!), the Haydonites, from the Sentinels, allies that weren't really allies after all, and we still don't know the reason why. The Shadow Chronicles loosely tied the Haydonites as "the shadows" that the Invid Regis kept refering to, in the Third Generation and the Robotech Expeditionary Force as "children of the shadows".

The movie provides us with some new characters, and some old ones. On top of that, all the women in the Robotech Expeditionary Force have large breasts! From Max and Miria's youngest daughter to unnamed bridge officers. Even Ariel, the flat-chested Invid princess, now has large breasts with Gainax Bounce (tm).

Again, being a lover of Amazon warrior women, I love large, Gainax-bouncing breasts.

But come on!!! I want a real Robotech story!!! Shadow Chronicles is a very misleading name. It should have been called "Shadow Chronicle", meaning "this is all you get".

That is, until Yune and company bring you their prequel. Which, finally brings you to Robotech: Prelude to the Shadow Chronicles. Whew!)

Is it a bad story? Yes and no. It rewrites the end story for the Invid Regent, Breetai, and the edgey, insane, wild, and crazy, but never boring, T.R. Edwards.

The problem with Edwards is that he was never believable as a bad guy. He's the human equivalent of Khyron (from the First Generation / Macross Series) but without the charming, likeable personality. No one would seriously follow this guy across the street, let alone into a coup d'etat halfway across the galaxy!

There are some things that the story gets right. We want to know more about the new Sentinel characters Vince and Jean Grant. It's nice to see plot involvement from decent characters. However, Vince's heroics are very reminiscent of what he does in Shadow Chronicles. The shark jumping, over the top moment is when Edwards is "helped" into an Invid Genesis Pit (tm), by Janice and comes out a huge, mutant monster! He's almost as large as a Horizon-T dropship, laser proof, and still with a mean bone to pick with Rick Hunter, tentacles and all.

Really? No, I mean REALLY?! Could we possibily try something MORE cliche? PLEASE?!!!

Seriously, did the writers just get lazy and decide to put all of their really bad ideas on a dart board? In addition, Breetai does still die with the Invid Regent, but they are killed in an even more less satisfying way than what Carl Macek and Jack McKinney came up with. The only thing "good" to come out of this is that there is no little "Roy" Hunter. Admiral Lisa Hunter miscarries, after sustaining combat injuries on the bridge of the SDF-3.

Am I taking this too seriously? After all, it's only a cartoon. Maybe, but to be fair, I didn't let George Lucas off the hook for destroying Star Wars. Yune and company did not destroy Robotech. That was done way before them, but they didn't rescue it either. All in all, "Prelude" feels a lot like "Shadow Chronicles" but in comic book form, minus the big boobs. No, seriously. Janice goes from big boobs in "Shadow Chronicles" to just noticable in "Prelude", even when she gets her new body.

Is it worth the money? If you can pick it up for under $5, I'd say you still overpayed, but hey, it's only five bucks, and you might actually think it's entertaining... maybe.
