Most relevant book on Contemporary Art I've read so far

Having studied Fine Art at University which included an intense Art History component, I found that I have been quite comfortable with most History prior to Duchampian Theory... then I get a little confused. Terry Smith goes to great depths in making this possibly confusing subject relatively easy to understand.

Within his essay he divides contemporary art up into three components: mainstream Modernism, retro-sensationalism and post colonial. Through investigating current galleries and artists Smith is able to lay his case open.

Drugs and Contemporary Art

It is impossible to read this book without a thesaurus and a dictionary beside you. Even then, drugs are needed to reach the trance like state that is necesary to get yourelf through this book. There are some useful messages at the end of a book that could have been written in a quarter of the space but by the time I got to the messages I was brain dead. The sad thing is that there is ample excellent material in the book to have made a real difference to the understanding of contemporary art by the wider community but that opportunity has been lost for the moment.

Preface

There exists an invariant set of physical principles founded in the field of mechanics that can be used by designers as aids to understanding the behavior of existing structural forms and in devising new approaches. The development of these principles has flowered during the past three centuries to the extent that they are amazingly well established and documented. Some new understandings, of course, are continuing to occur and will hopefully always occur. Still, the analytical tools already available to the designer are extensive and enormously powerful. This is true to the extent that the real challenge in the field of structures lies not so much in developing new analytical tools but in bringing those currently in existence to bear in the designing and formulation of creative structural solutions with the intent of making better buildings.

In this book we discuss in an introductory way the nature of the invariant physical principles that underlie the behavior of structures under load. The primary goal of the book, however, is not simply to teach analytical techniques but, more generally, to explore their role in the design of structures in a building context. Because of this larger goal, the book covers material discussed not only in specialized engineering curricula but also, to some extent, that covered in architecture curricula as well. The traditional hard boundaries between subdisciplines in engineering (e.g., statics and strength of materials) have also been deliberately softened and a more integrative approach taken.

The book is divided into three major parts. Part I is an introduction to the subject and to fundamental concepts of analysis and design. Part 11 introduces the reader to most of the primary structural elements used in buildings and discusses their analysis and design. Each of the chapters in this part is divided into sections that (1) introduce the element considered and explain its role in building, (2) discuss its behavior under load in qualitative terms (an "intuitive" approach), (3) examine its behavior under load in quantitative terms, and (4) discuss methods for designing (rather than just analyzing) the element. Part III contains a unique discussion of the logic of structural design, as it is a part of the larger building design process. The Appendices generally discuss more advanced principles of structural analysis.

The book is intended largely as a resource for students and instructors wishing to design their own curriculum. For those wanting to adopt a strictly qualitative approach to the subject, for example, it is possible to read only Chapter 1 in Part I, the sections entitled "Introduction" and "General Principles" in each of the chapters in Part II, and all of Part III. This coverage will provide a brief qualitative overview of the field with a special emphasis on design rather than analysis. For those students who already have a background in the analytical aspects of structures, Part III contains summary information useful in a design context. Part III can be read independently by such students.

Within Parts I, II, and III there is a certain redundancy in the way analytical topics are covered so that students or instructors can integrate the material in the order they see fit. Shear and moment diagrams, for example, are first introduced in an abstract way in Chapter 2. They are reintroduced in connection with the analysis of a specific structural element—the truss. Where the different presentations are introduced, if at all, may be varied by the instructor. The author, for example, typically chooses to introduce shear and moment diagrams initially as a part of truss analysis and then follow up with the more abstract development of shear and moment diagrams in Chapter 2 before going into beam analysis and design. Other instructors may choose to approach the subject material differently. The book is designed to have sufficient flexibility to support different approaches. In any event, the material is presented in such a way that a direct cover-to-cover reading is also appropriate.

The author is, of course, indebted to a vast number of people in either a direct or an indirect way for the approach taken in this book. Professor Spiro Pollalis contributed his time and help in revising the manuscript and in preparing the accompanying student CD which contains examples and case studies. The endless patience and contributions of several years of students in the Graduate School of Design at Harvard who have taken courses involving the material contained herein are also greatly appreciated. Civil engineering student? This is must-read!

Very usefull if you are studying civil engineering or structures. All aspects of mechanics are included. I would say that all chapters are written more understandable than you can hear them at the collage courses. I have to say that this book is a must-read for every civil engineering student!

It's very good book in structure ( I will never use best or perfect in my review ). It's not sophisticated and not too excessive for architecture student. After reading this book you will know that structure design is not difficult it seems though it's not easy anyway. For architecture student, if you need only one book in structure this is the right book especially in understanding rigid frame structure, explained in hundreds of pages !

Getting Back to the Personal

This is definitely a nice, new approach to a textbook for learning history. Instead of writing down facts and dates and impersonal stories of conquest and death, Roderick Nash and Gregory Graves have set out to accomplish a new style of history told through biography. Each chapter is immensely researched and carefully selected to show a period of the United States's past.

In the first volume, the one in question, it is not a surprise that the chapters are dominated by white males. However, the authors are kind enough to include Abigail Adams, Tecumsuh, and Frederick Douglass to the line-up to engage readers in the subordination of all three groups: women, Native Americans, and African Americans, respectively.

It is also not a general surprise that many of the chapters overlap their history dates as there were many people acting at the same time in influential ways across the beginning years of the United States. It's often hard, at least for me, to keep the dates in an orderly fashion due to the way it is written and the ovrelap, but the authors are skilled enough to remind you appropriately of when an overlap is occurring.

This is such a well-written text that it could be read from cover-to-cover or it can be read piecemeal depending on who you are interested in. Due to the biographical nature, it helps make the stories more memorable and we also get the background before birth of the important person in question and then their death. It's often unknown to us how, say, Christopher Columbus died or his other exploits across the ocean due to the fact that history textbooks usually just mention his major accomplishments and move on. This text encompasses the person and their relationships, their actions, and their faults in order to exemplify the American or non-American individuals that stood out from the rest and shaped a nation.

traditional approach

The idea implemented here is an old one. Dating back centuries. Where earlier books might have been biographies of famous people. To inspire youngsters to such heights. In reflection of our more enlightened times, the authors give biographies of a diverse set of Americans. The traditional ones are here. Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. But so too are Frederick Douglass and Christopher Columbus. Technically, Columbus was not an American. The word is an anachronism in his case.

The inclusion of Douglass and Lee in the same volume makes for interesting comparisons. Their careers and causes were point and counterpoint.

The chapters are quick reads. The questions deliberately try to raise the reader's interest and involvement in understanding the subjects' lives and their times.

detailed and enjoyable

I found this book to be very informative and well organized. I think it's important to have collective understandings of the "stories" of American influences who helped shape America itself.
I might also be a bit bias given that Graves is my professor and I have an enormous crush on him. I adore this Okie's lectures. Just like his lectures, these collective stories are informative and very interesting. Captivating at best. Go Sooners!

An original and novel work with just a few minor problems, would be appreciated by even those knowledgeable in the field

Many, if not most, multi-hundred page books published by Osprey publishing tend to be compilations of previously published Osprey books as opposed to being original works. Hence the first that should be said is about the book is that it is not compilation of previously published Osprey publications on German armour. Instead it is a new original work. This book, like so many Osprey publications (especially the older ones), is also not just a regurgitation or summary of previously published secondary sources. The author, Thomas Anderson, is fluent in German and has made very good use of his German through his very extensive use of original German language sources contained in the US and Germany and only relatively minor use of secondary sources.

In a nutshell the book is primarily about how german armoured doctrine developed over the pre-war and early war period, at a relatively high level (strategic and operational as opposed to tactical), organizational structure of panzer units (from divisional level down to platoon) and development over the same period, how the physical characteristics of the vechicles developed and a history of early war armoured battles (again, at a high level strategic and operational level as opposed to tactical level). Much of this discussion is based, as previously mentioned, on original German language documents. Hence it is not a rehash or synopsis of previously published material. It is very nice to see, for once, a novel discussion of german armoured doctrine, organizational structure, vehicles and battles. One area the book is particulary strong ,regarding novelty, are the many photographs. A very large number (but not all) are new and have either never or rarely been published before.

The book does suffer from a few weaknesses that prevent it from being worthy of five star rating. One is that, considering the discussion of vehicle's physical characteristics, there are no cut-aways or other illustrations showing the interiors or exteriors of vehicles. Related to this, it would have been nice to see comparative illustrations between German vehicles and those of England, Poland, France and the Soviet Union to better show the similarities and differences between these vehicle's physical characteristics. Another weakness is the lack of maps to discuss how campaigns progressed at the strategic and operational level. Very ironic given the space the book uses to discuss strategic and operational actions. Unfortunately this lack of comparison and contrast also extends to many other areas such as individual tank crew training for example (Germany made great efforts to insure that tank crews were trained together as an integral unit and were kept together as much as possible while other nations did not). A third problem is that organizational structures between Germany and other nations are not compared.

Despite these problems the book is still very original and novel. It is one that even those who are fairly knowledgeable in this field would probably appreciate and value. Four stars.

Gorgeous, heartbreaking, and heart-mending

There are so many things to love about Always Second Best. This is a multifaceted story if ever there was one. It broke my heart, halfway attempted to put it back together, and then broke it all over again.

Always Second Best has Romeo & Juliet vibes for the modern YA audience, with a very different ending. It's a novel of love and of loss that shows us it's okay--even important--to question the things we feel so certain that we want. And same with relationships. Familial, romantic, platonic... Sometimes relationships seem solid in their standing, whichever that standing may be. Love. Hate. Distrust. But by the end, nothing's exactly where it began. Forgiveness and perspective and knowledge are powerful things.

This is a book about discovering that no family is perfect and sometimes what may seem unforgivable is, actually, possible to let go of. Or at least to try.

Nick and Emilia. Nick and Em. I already loved them from A Summer Like No Other--which, you don't have to read to enjoy this book, but you should read it anyway.

"You're scared. But you don't need to be. Use this fear to show them who you are."

Nick is a hell of a guy. I loved him in the prequel and I love him even more now. Even when things between Em and he are rocky, he remains a rock in the way that he's there for her. This is a second chance romance you'll be rooting from from page one. (Or, if you've read the prequel, from before the book even begins.)

And Em. Man, life throws Em everything it can in this story and she stays on her feet. She's strong and determined and is given to gentle infusions of humor that make even the hardest scenes a little easier to bear.

The plot twists and winds through unexpected loops, one after another after another. Grief piles on top of grief. This book will slay you at times, but it will also put you as close to back together as it can. Which won't be all the way. Because Always Second Best is the kind of book that will stick with you, deep in your chest, for a long time after reading.

A Lovely New Adult "Every(wo)man"!

Seventeen year old ballerina Emilia Moretti has felt second best her whole life, and she has decided that she is going to show the world that she can be the best. (The world mainly being her birth mother and her ex best friend/summer fling.)

"But when everything went crashing faster than a dancer missing his or her landing, I still had hope. I dreamed he'd come and knock at my door, that he'd tell me he was sorry, that he'd fight for me."​

Like most teenage girls (and honestly, us adults as well!), Emilia longs to be sought after and fought for. She bases much of her self worth on the idea of, more than being the best AT something, being the best and first choice FOR someone.

Because this is such a relevant topic to women of every age the world over, I was thrilled to see Nowodazkij handle it in such a beautiful way.

"Being first doesn't always mean the first place on the podium. Being first should be about learning what it is that makes you happy and pursuing that dream and not giving up and staying true to yourself. Being first should be about the journey."

Much more than a romance, Always Second Best chronicles a girl's journey to self-appreciation, recognition of self-worth, and realization of her place in the world. It is, in many ways, a sort of Every(wo)man story, and I can honestly say that it spoke to me on many levels.

Secrets revealed, heartbreak and love.

Book three in the Broken Dreams series. Best to read A Summer Like No Other before this to really follow along.

Eight months after their summer together, Emilia and Nick find themselves tiptoeing around each other. For Emilia, being around Nick is just too difficult for her because she's in love with him. Nick flitting from one girl to the next has crushed her. She just doesn't know why they only had one summer. She tries to focus on her dancing, since the showcase is coming up and helping her Nonna out at the restaurant. Anything to keep her mind off of Nick. Not to mention all the heartache she's suffering through because of her father and the circumstances of her birth. People in Emilia's life aren't what they seem and there are many more secrets to come out. Will Emilia learn what's most important to her?

I devoured this book in hours. My heart broke for Emilia, but I loved how determined she was to figure out the truth. Standing up to a family member is never easy. Nick finally grew up and became a man in my eyes. Dancing was his passion, but he wanted to make sure he was doing it for the right reasons. I couldn't ask for anything more in the series.
