The idea of positive deviance might seem odd at first, but becomes quite powerful as you understand it

Happiness is something different than the absence of misery and health is something more than the absence of disease and debilitation. These statements are so obvious as to seem trivial. However, they are still true. If you have been fortunate to be part of an organization that was in one of those wonderful upward spirals that also involved a phenomenal team that was unified and happy, well, you know that working in such a positive environment is wonderfully different than working in an organization going through downward spiral with a demoralized team. What can be most interesting is that when the phenomenal team that experienced the upward cycle runs into a rough patch, they seem to stick together and avoid letting the rough patch develop into a crushing storm.

This terrific book is not one of those soft and gooey books calling for people to just get along or offering what amount to incantations in order to get people to somehow coalesce into the team they aren't. Instead, it posits the notion that when an organization is in a state of a certain kind of success it is as much an exception as a business that is falling towards extinction. It asks that if there are death spirals there might also be positive spirals. Yet the bulk of business study is on the mistakes and failures of organizations and on avoiding mistakes. While it is important to avoid making mistakes that can kill your organization, does it seem likely that one can learn success only by avoiding failure? Of course not.

This book and the papers it contains are laying a foundation for scholarly study of the positive deviance of successful organizations in order to develop principles for organizations to implement to achieve success in all aspects of its organizational being. It really isn't just about the money. Although the organization has to have financial success to exist, it is also about the people who make up the organization. One of the core principles of this book is that an organization that is concerned about virtuousness is going to be more successful and more resilient than one that ignores these principles.

There are 23 fine papers in here and I am sure that some will resonate with you more than others. However, I encourage you to read it. I believe you can begin to view your organization and your participation in it differently. You can begin to see what Professors Cameron, Quinn, Dutton and others are pointing us towards. And after you get past the wrong notion that they are talking about something too squishy to be real business, you begin to relate the questions they are asking to the times in your life when you were in that state of positive deviance. You will be able to relate the principles of virtue to what went well and things will seem more clear about why things go right.

While the book is really laying out possible areas of study for other scholars of organizational behavior to pursue, it also is quite useful for businesspeople and other organizational participants to read and think through the ideas of positive deviance. And while the upward spirals did have components of financial success, that alone will not last. It won't last without the people and people cannot perform well over extended periods of time without trust, gratitude, and more of the virtues that allow people to bond and put forward exceptional performance. The goal of this area of study is to develop theories and measures that will allow organizations to understand how these kinds of principles are part of their core ability to succeed.

If you're looking for a great overview of the field of positive organizational psychology, this is it. I purchased this book to use for my master's thesis and was very happy I did. The content is excellent and easy to read, with extensive use of citations. Highly recommended.

Paul Mathews is president of Mathews Malnar and Bailey, Inc., a provider of quality engineering and applied statistical consulting and training services for R&D, product, process, and manufacturing engineering organizations. Paul has almost 30 years of experience as an engineer, scientist, professor, and consultant. He received a B.S. degree in physics from Miami University (1981) and an M.S. degree in physics from Case Western Reserve University (1986). Paul also holds ten patents and is the author of Design of Experiments with MINITAB (2005, ASQ Quality Press). Paul is a member of the American Statistical Association and a senior member of the American Society for Quality. In his free time, Paul and his wife Kathy race and cruise their sailboat Whitehawk on Lake Erie.

The Holland's Family saga is a book I look for twice a year, and no doubt Collision Course is another GREAT one from a GREAT writer! Clever research and literary skills are phenomenal! When you read the Holland's family saga it comes out like a movie in your mind! The research in the details of towns, songs, quotes are nothing more than a author who believes in his writing skills and wants the readers to get everything they paid for! The tears that this book cause me to have was unreal! Clever Black way passed well done! Excellent! Excellent Writing Skills, Excellent Characters, Excellent Story Lines, and Excellent For Allowing Me To Be On This Ride! Keep These Books Coming And I Will Keep Reading! EXCELLENT! A Holland's Family Fan For Life!

Review on Collision Course

Wow! For the most part, I must say: "It's getting hot in here" Clever once again I must say you sent us on another emotional roller coaster. Collision Course was everything I expected it to be and more. Pepper was partially trained by one of the best but when Carmella got killed, she was just all out of control. I understand she was young but she just made all kinds of mistakes and the good book says you live by the sword, you die by the sword. I know she ain't just think she could keep ripping people off and killing folks with no consequences. She was an accident waiting to happen. Shiloam was dirty in what she did with Tacoda but she managed to come out smelling like a rose, or so she thinks. Chablis got what he deserved. I like the idea of Koko and Lee together. I'm glad Mary is starting to remove her blinders and recognize how powerful her family really is. The Hollands and Benders will be a force to be reckoned with but I will admit that they are getting to comfortable and greedy. They plan to go up against Gacha and I see big trouble on the horizon. As always, you've done a phenonenal job and I give you a standing ovation on this book.Can't wait to see what the next book bring about. Supherb!

This left me SPEECHLESS!!!!

This was by far one of the best editions of The Holland Saga. I just love the family connections. It's always that one person that will mess it up for everyone, Siloam. I really dont care for her. Chapter 39 had me in tears. Glad that all is well though. Poor Pepper and crew. That Faye Bender is the truth. But I think the family is getting a little too comfortable and greedy. They need to know when to walk away. And the time is now. Too much heat is being directed to Ponderosa. And I dont see them getting out of this one. Walee needs to calm down on his freaky porn. I like Koko and her new love. Udelle gotta man up cause at times Kimi is harder than he is. Glad Mary saw the light , she was late but she got it. Each edition has me nervous from the beginning. Now im scared to know what will happen next. Keep up the good work Mr. Black.

Beautiful, fun book that can be used to suit your own specific needs and help you on a path to medication and a calmer life!

I have got the Yoga bit down -for over 16 years in fact –but though there continues to be a growing body of studies relating to the many health benefits of meditation, it continues to be something that challenges me. However I got the Calm App and really love it, as it provides short, calming, easy to follow guided meditations that I can easily fit in post work out as I sit in the sauna. Hence I saw this book and its good reviews and decided to purchase it to compliment the app.

The book a small compact read filled with beautiful photography that in itself is calming enough along with mantas and exercises you can complete. Rather than be the type of book you can read cover to cover in a linear fashion, it is more of a guide, so you can go to whatever chapter appeals to you most or meets your needs. There are 8 sections: Nature, Sleep, Travel, Relationships, Work, Children, Creativity, and Food. As the book suggests, the end goal is to allow the reader to develop 2 daily habits – one being mediation and the other journaling. I also love the fact that this includes a little page marker embedded into the book so you can keep track of where you were last visit.

I also think it’s important to point out that though I do have the app (and I only use the free version) this book, though a compliment to that, it not a hard sell to make you also download the app. I personally cannot stand when books are nothing but a sales pitch for another product; but happily this is not the case with this book. There is a two page feature simply explaining the app and how to download it should you choose –but no more than that.

The book has fun exercises: ten people that make you most happy, three highlights of today, coloring, design your own tattoo, try your hand at calligraphy as examples of simple but calming exercise laid out in the book. There are ideas to trigger a good night’s sleep such as creating a sleep sanctuary or a simple sleep meditation, ways to take a break, travel meditations and simple exercises. Tips on mindful and present eating. So many simple yet effective ways to be calm and mindful that are great for those that maybe try too hard then fail at what we consider traditional meditation.

Beautiful, fun book that can be used to suit your own specific needs and help you on a path to meditation and a calmer life!

Meditation made simple

Calm. I am a religious user of the Calm app, which offers guided and unguided meditations for pretty much any situation. The book is a nice segway into journaling and successfully forming meditation scenarios on your own. The look has a very (very!) loose and free feel to it, almost like a doodle notebook that inspires you to relax and concentrate. I absolutely love it. It's thought provoking and completely unlike any other book I own. An interesting and unique spin on meditation!

What I thought I was going to be reading:
I am a relative newcomer to meditation. I’ve practiced yoga for years, but never took the time to focus on just meditation. I bought this book without much research and without downloading the Calm app. I was expecting a how-to book on meditation. I wasn’t expecting a scientific exploration, necessarily, just a simple guide on meditation and some information on how it can impact your day-to-day.

What I actually read:
For me, this book read more as a coffee table book than an informational, how-to guide. Each page is a beautiful photograph or drawing with some minimal writing here and there. The book has a few “chapters,” focusing on one thing at a time like sleep, for example. As another reviewer wrote, I felt like the book needed more “meat on its bones.” The layout was visually interesting, but the actual content wasn’t particularly informative.

What to expect:
Expect a coffee table book on meditation. Don’t expect a how-to guide on meditation. Expect a nice book to thumb through for visuals and a few helpful sentences on meditation and living a better life. If you’re looking for a guide on how to meditate or any in-depth scientific exploration of meditation and its benefits, look elsewhere.

This review is not based on the content.
The book can hardly be called a book. It is merely 90 page long Word document with all the default heading styles.
In addition to being quick and dirty cropped screen grabs, the figures are also blurry.
Finally, the document is printed in greyscale, while the preview is in color.

About the Author
Ann Charters received her B.A. at Berkeley and her Ph.D. at Columbia. She first met Kerouac at a poetry reading in Berkeley in 1956, and compiled a comprehensive bibliography of his work in 1967. A professor of English at the University of Connecticut, she is also the editor of Selected Letters of Jack Kerouac and the Portable Kerouac Reader, and the author of Beats and Company: Portrait of a Literary Generation.

DO NOT BUY OR RENT. Especially if you need it for class.

I rented this book for my English 1302 class and it was completely useless. This "compact" version does not have all the stories the physical addition does and they do not offer the full version of the book in an E-book. I tried to read "A Rose for Emily" which is in the table of contents, and when you get to the page number it's just four blank pages telling you the story isn't in the book. WHAT THE HELL GUYS!?! I'm really pissed that I spent my money on renting this useless book. I had to drive an hour and a half to go rent the full version from a book store and it cost me $80.
My other issue is I was on the page for the full edition of this book, clicked the kindle edition and it switches from full version to compact version with out any warning. I thought I was renting the full version. So great job Amazon for screwing me out of my money.

I'm spending $45 to rent this useless book for college despite the fact that all of the stories in it can be found online for free by googling their titles. I only needed the book in order to reference the correct page numbers.
