Fugitives of Chaos (The Chronicles of Chaos Book 2), by John C. Wright

Wright's new fantasy, which began with Orphans of Chaos, and continues in Fugitives of Chaos, is a tale about five orphans raised in a strict British boarding school who begin to discover that they may not be human beings. The students at the school do not age, while the world around them does. The orphans have been kidnapped from their true parents, robbed of their powers, and raised in ignorance by super-beings no more human than they are: pagan gods or fairy-queens, Cyclopes, sea-monsters, witches, or things even stranger.
The five have made sinister discoveries about themselves. Amelia is apparently a fourth-dimensional being; Victor is a synthetic man who can control the molecular arrangement of matter around him; Vanity can find secret passageways through solid walls where none had previously been; Colin is a psychic; Quentin is a warlock. Each power comes from a different paradigm or view of the inexplicable universe: and they should not be able to co-exist under the same laws of nature. Why is it that they can?
The children must experiment with and learn to control their strange abilities in order to escape their captors. Something very important must be at stake in their imprisonment.

From Publishers Weekly
Five unusual students at an isolated English boarding school—Amelia, Vanity, Colin, Quentin and Victor—fought to uncover their true secret identities in Orphans of Chaos (2005), only to have their memories stolen (again) by their teachers, who are really their jailers. In this exciting sequel, Amelia remembers enough to convince her friends of their shared trouble, and together the five students set out to escape the school, regain their memories, rediscover their individual powers and remain free. Wright keeps the tension high as the students struggle to outwit the teachers and their minions, but never lets us forget his characters are teenagers, prone to all the usual teen troubles as well as the problems posed by their secret "higher" identities. With its focus on Golden Age genre tropes and quirky teenage romance, this fantasy adventure reads a bit like J.K. Rowling meets Roger Zelazny, and should be of particular interest to youthful fans looking for something less predictable than the usual YA fare. (Nov.)

Review
"Wright's myth-infused fantasy looks like something older Harry Potter fans might enjoy with its creaky British boarding school setting and its five ageless orphans--Colin, Quentin, Victor, Vanity, and Amelia each with a supernatural gift." -Publishers Weekly on Orphans of Chaos "Wright's Orphans of Chaos is a stylish roller-coaster ride through the best loops and swerves of science fiction and fantasy.  Zelazny lovers in particular ought to love this book as much as I did." -Sherwood Smith

"A bit like C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia updated by half a century, but with more gusto." -Locus on Orphans of Chaos "I don't know if John Wright's intent for Orphans of Chaos was to write a Harry Potter for grownups. But that's what he's accomplished. . . .highly enjoyable." --SFsite

"An exciting, unusual, and very satisfying ride through the author's imagination, and the results are certainly going to make Wright even more of a hot property." --Chronicle on Orphans of Chaos

"Start of a complex mythology-based series from the author of the astonishing far-future Golden Age trilogy . . . . Fascinatingly, dazzlingly…erudite fantasy that trends inexorably toward science fiction; addicts will pounce." -Kirkus, starred review on Orphans of Chaos

Even better follow up to first volume
By Joseph M. Reninger
Another exciting tale in the Chronicles of Chaos by John C. Wright. This book picks up right where the first volume left off, with the five students losing their memories of all that has happened and that they have discovered about themselves. They've forgotten that they are hostages preventing an interdimensional war between the forces of Chaos (from which the students have come) and an wide assortment of other mythological forces, mostly centered around the Greek gods. They have magical and pseudo-scientific powers that they could use to escape, if they could only remember that they had them and they want to escape. The only exception is Amelia Windrose, who was able to put a bit of a block to the blocking of her memory. She quickly recovers and rallies the troops to flee their English countryside school/prison, beginning a fantastic flight whose only destination is freedom. Can they escape together? Will their flight mean the outbreak of war on an unsuspecting human population?

The plot is fairly intriguing. I found the first book foundered a little under the wide variety of mythology and the pseudo-scientific explanations and arguments between the students. Both of these are somewhat scaled back in this book as the band of schoolmates flees their school on Christmas day. Human drama and exciting action take over. In addition to fleeing the school, they have to regain their memories and their powers, and figure out what their final destination should be. This novel is a bit of a page turner and I look forward to the conclusion of the story in the final volume, Titans of Chaos.

I know I gave the first book 4 stars as well, though I was rounding up from 3.75. This is a full 4 star book. I hope the final volume rates even higher!

Absurd in a good way
By D. Bost
While there is some level of futility in reviewing a sequel that was good, or at least as good as the previous book(s) in a series (by contrast warning people when a series suddenly goes downhill is both easy and fun), I'll give it a try:

The Orphans of Chaos series is essentially "This will get out of hand. It will get out of hand and we'll be lucky to live through it" fed to a necronomicon printed over an old annotated Greek mythology textbook and read after taking the brown acid. Things just keep escalating, and while it's hard to match the transition from boarding-school hijinks to eldritch abominations attempting to eat your face that occurs in the first book, Wright makes the attempt to keep it up and largely succeeds.

This means that the genre shift from Lovecraftian mystery to outright action leans heavily toward the latter on this one, so if you're expecting much more world-building you may be disappointed. The building is done and now the characters are busy ripping it apart. The trippy anachronisms and out-of-place scenes that make the other books so much fun continue, adding a classic car chase constructed from elements of classical mythology and good old Lovecraft-speak instead of actual cars to the list of things you'd never thought you'd be finding yourself imagining, and the trend of the children doing amazing things only to be immediately outclassed by older and more competent beings somehow fails to ever get old. The characters are likable when they're supposed to be, alien when they should be, and annoying when the writer wants them to be actual teenagers, making them all well-rounded if inhuman characters with clear and sympathetic if not entirely lovable motivations.

Definitely worth the read, five stars with no reservations.

An OK follow-up to ORPHANS OF CHAOS
By ML
In FUGITIVES OF CHAOS, the five godlike teenage hostages introduced in ORPHANS OF CHAOS once again elude their captors, and this time it looks like they might be successful. Spunky and (as everyone keeps telling her) sexy Amelia remains the first person narrator. Tension builds during the early part of the book, as she carefully plots her escape, all the while observing and deceiving the schoolmasters. Unfortunately, Wright has difficulty maintaining focus once the orphans are free, and particularly after Amelia survives another kidnapping attempt by the monster Grendel. They go shopping in Paris, they tool around in Vanity's magic boat, they take a cruise on the QEII, they philosophize, they banter, they flirt, ... and they nearly get eaten by an angry sea monster. Some of this is interesting, some of it is filler, and all of it says "be sure to buy book #3!"

As with Wright's earlier work, this book is at many points amusing and (in a positive way) provocative. I also found the sexual content in this volume less objectionable than that in the first, mainly because the pedophilic and sadomasochistic elements are much less present. Yes, Amelia and Vanity do a striptease dance for Colin and yes, the sexual banter that was so prevalent in ORPHANS remains. Still, the sleaze factor in FUGITIVES is a notch or two below that in ORPHANS. Also, unlike some of the other reviewers, I was generally impressed with Wright's discussion of the contrasting paradigms of the teens and their Olympian adversaries. His command of classical mythology, philosophy, and physics/cosmology is good enough seem plausible to a lay reader like me.

Recommendation: You can probably follow this book without reading #1, but you shouldn't try. If, however, you read the first book and found it half-way enjoyable, you might as well pick up #2.

P.S. The cover artist would have you believe that Colin gets his guitar in this book, but that actually happens in TITANS OF CHAOS.

Why aren't text-books written like this?
By GLBT
The text book I'm using for my Managerial Accounting book (which shall remain nameless to protect the innocent) seems to be specially designed to make every single points as confusing as possible and to maximize the boredom factor. The writers clearly went out of their way to avoid anything resembling humor.

I was hesitant about getting "Managerial Accounting for Dummies" but finally tried a copy from the campus library and was amazed how simple some of these concepts actually can be. I ended up ordering my own copy and it was a HUGE help! Very simple explanations and even though the humor is a bit corny, it does break up the monotony. Also, the text is large enough that I can read it without my eyes bleeding, unlike my 600-page text book.

This book won't teach you EVERYTHING you need to know about managerial accounting, but it will make the basics a LOT easier!

Helpful guide for the College student taking a Managerial Accounting course, authored by a CPA/professor with a sense of humor
By Steve Ramm
Most of my reviews on Amazon are for "entertainment related" items but - as a CPA and a CFO - I certainly understand finance books. This particular title was sent to me by Amazon as part of their "Vine Reviewer" program in which they send selected books to a selected group of reviewers.

The "Dummies" series has sure grown since 1991 when Dan Gookin authored "DOS for Dummies". There are now over 1800 (!) "... for Dummies" titles.

I've used - and reviewed - quite a few of these books - especially business related and accounting volumes. Some are written by what I call "professional authors" who are not using the subject they are writing about in their daily life. The author of this book - Mark Holtzman is a CPA, with experience in a major CPA firm, but he is also currently a teacher and Chair of the Accounting Department at Seton Hall University, so "teaching" is his business. I also like the idea that doesn't take everything seriously. There is a light humorous touch in his writing when he gives examples. This is not to say that this is a "fun" book (okay the cartoons that head off each chapter ARE funny. And it's not something to read before you go to bed.

As Holtzman says on Page 2 of the Introduction, he is assuming that the reader is:
A college student taking a managerial accounting course who needs help in understanding the concepts
A recent college graduate who is considering a career in managerial (versus financial reporting) accounting.
A professional who wants a refresher course.

If you are one of these - especially one of the first group -, I think you'll find this 334-page book helpful.

This is an excellent progressive reference for anyone considering taking a managerial accounting course ...
By Deb
No, managerial accounting (management accounting) isn't what your regular CPA does. Of course if you are looking at this book, you are probably very much aware of what a managerial accountant does for a living. Rather than focus outwardly preparing reports that make the public and the IRS aware of what's going on in the company, the managerial accountant does a lot of analyzing, evaluation, and "planning and budgeting for the future" of a business. In other words, if you want your company to succeed, you have to have someone on board who will help you achieve your goals. A managerial accountant is that rare breed who will do just that.

In the "Dummies" books there are usually a few assumptions and this book is no exception. Primarily books like these are geared toward students who are currently taking a managerial course or plan to in the future. Other interested parties may include people who would like to brush up on the subject, business or entrepreneurs, or those who need certification for their career. Whatever the motivation, this book is packed with information that will benefit anyone interested in managerial accounting.

The book itself is not progressive, but rather one in which you can focus on a particular topic or topics you are interested in. Any newbies to managerial accounting would do well to work with the book from start to finish. The book is generously illustrated with charts, graphs, formulas, and numerous informative sidebars. For example, one sidebar differentiates several companies as to whether they are service, retail, or manufacturing.

Each chapter is prefaced by bullet points outlining what is in the chapter and a brief commentary and overview of it. You'll find several icons in this book that point out tips, things you'll want to remember, technical stuff, examples, and some that offer up a few cautionary notes This is an excellent reference that will help anyone out who is currently taking a managerial accounting course or plans to in the future. The material is clear, concise, and very user-friendly.

Unequal Affections: A Pride and Prejudice Retelling, by Lara S. Ormiston

When Elizabeth Bennet first knew Mr. Darcy, she despised him and was sure he felt the same. Angered by his pride and reserve, influenced by the lies of the charming Mr. Wickham, she never troubled herself to believe he was anything other than the worst of men—until, one day, he unexpectedly proposed.

Mr. Darcy’s passionate avowal of love causes Elizabeth to reevaluate everything she thought she knew about him. What she knows is that he is rich, handsome, clever, and very much in love with her. She, on the other hand, is poor, and can expect a future of increasing poverty if she does not marry. The incentives for her to accept him are strong, but she is honest enough to tell him that she does not return his affections. He says he can accept that—but will either of them ever be truly happy in a relationship of unequal affection?

Diverging from Jane Austen’s classic novel Pride and Prejudice at the proposal in the Hunsford parsonage, this story explores the kind of man Darcy is, even before his “proper humbling,” and how such a man, so full of pride, so much in love, might have behaved had Elizabeth chosen to accept his original proposal.

Review

“One of the most beautiful, engrossing, and haunting books I’ve read. It’s clever, original, and enthralling . . . this is the most obsessively perfect character-driven novel I’ve read in a long time!” — Luccia Gray, Rereading Jane Eyre

“Complex, intriguing and romantic, Unequal Affections will be one of those novels that you must read more than once to fully understand why it is so compelling.”—Laurel Ann, Austenprose.com

About the Author
Lara S. Ormiston is a Christian, wife, mother, and writer, in that order. She had a wonderful childhood as the daughter of missionaries in Indonesia and Zimbabwe, where she read Regency romances instead of watching TV. She loves Jane Austen because of her wit and morality, and the nineteenth century because of its beautiful language and elegant and erudite conversations no one would ever have these days. Lara lives in Round Rock, Texas, with her husband and three children.

Realistic and Poignant Portrayal of This Immortal Love Story
By AgeofIrony
I've read a vast array of "Pride and Prejudice" retellings, and most of them really just are an excuse for the author to be a fly on the wall for sex scenes. It's a deeply cynical way of reducing Darcy's and Elizabeth's profound connection to its physical component, which Jane Austen herself clearly never had to introduce in her masterpiece because it was unnecessary.

Ms. Ormiston refuses to take the easy way out with this novel. In it, we find an Elizabeth who is stubborn but also far more practical than the Elizabeth of Austen's novel. She does not yield to Darcy's impassioned declaration of love and proposal because she loves him but because she fears for the safety and security of her family--and only after demanding that Darcy give her time to reflect on the proposal. Nevertheless, she also experiences an immediate change of heart upon receiving Darcy's proposal because she realizes just how much she's misjudged his love as disapprobation. It's not so profound a change that she loses herself to him at once, but it is the catalyst for her own journey of self-knowledge and, eventually, love for the complex suitor seeking her hand and her heart.

What I found most moving about this novel, however, was Ms. Ormiston's portrayal of Darcy. Here is a man who is one of the most inscrutable heroes in all of fiction; Austen remains silent on his inner struggles when Elizabeth refuses him after his first proposal. In this novel, however, Darcy has the distinct advantage of already securing Elizabeth's hand before he undergoes his own transformation into the man to whom Elizabeth gives her heart. I say it's an advantage mostly because he has no choice but to examine himself and to submit himself to Elizabeth's rightful criticisms of his behavior and his attitudes towards his inferiors and even his peers, but there's also a danger, I suppose, that his transformation is due mostly to his desire to please Elizabeth and win her love rather than to his honest reflection on his faults. I think Ms. Ormiston avoids that danger with Elizabeth's stirring defense of her family and friends, whose flaws she sees with clear eyes yet accepts and loves anyway. In fact, Elizabeth is far more forgiving of her silly family and friends than she is of Darcy, from whom she withholds her whole heart until almost the final page despite becoming more attracted and more attached to him as their engagement progresses, because she expects Darcy to act like the man of sense and honor she knows him to be. This is not to say that Elizabeth is perfect while Darcy has to undergo all the changes; she displays some distinctly foolish behavior in her dealings with Wickham and with Darcy himself. However, the foolishness and misunderstandings of our lovers makes the ending so much sweeter, especially because Darcy realizes how selfish his love has been and because Elizabeth realizes how dishonest she has been with herself regarding her feelings for him.

Just a final note on the structure of the novel: Ms. Ormiston alternates the point of view between Darcy and Elizabeth, which is extremely effective because we not only have the opportunity to understand both of their struggles but also to realize how complementary their minds and hearts are as they work to overcome their misconceptions about each other and their doubts concerning their impending marriage.

I will end with the final thought that I look forward to re-reading this novel many times, which is my ultimate compliment for any novel.

Much better than other similar recent books

I'm sucked into new P&P fan fiction like someone who just can't look away from a train wreck. I've not reviewed any in quite a while because most of it is basically the same mess. I did feel compelled to comment on this one, though, because it was really much better than anything I'd read in a while in this genre. The characters seemed much more true to their Austen selves, rather than playing to the fan fic personas that have seemed to develop separately. There ins't a great deal of action here--it's mostly the dialogue and development of the emotional relationship between the principals, but it's nicely done. I stayed up half the night reading it though I hadn't planned to just because I was enjoying it. It's also rated PG, which I don't care about in and of itself, but it's nice to a) know going in and b) see a compelling romance develop without the too-easy resource of the physical. So if you're a bit of a P&P rewrite junkie like me, go ahead and pay for this one--it's worth more than 3 or 4 of the cheapies, as it's price suggests. :)

Excellent in every way.

I waited until this book came out in Kindle, but was intrigued by the preponderance of 5 star reviews. As a buyer, I usually give a little less credence to overly-enthusiastic or overly-critical reviews, but the plot really showed promise.

As it turned out, I found the promise fully fulfilled. It makes sense that a rational person, such as Elizabeth, would contain her anger and pique and think out how her decision will ensure the future of her family (not to mention her own security)--especially in an age in which marriage was just about the only way to ensure stability. From that premise, the rest of the story flows, and it flows very smoothly.

I am impressed by the way that the author, layer-by-layer and step-by-step, nuanced a process in which Lizzy would come to genuinely love Darcy. It was very gently and subtly done, but no less believable for the delicacy of the process.

I loved the insights into their feelings, their ups and downs, and their innermost thoughts. Very few--and I've read many--variations do as good a job depicting the reality of the moment. At any time, you understand the outside appearance (what others might perceive) and the inside reality (what the two characters are really thinking and feeling) and the two live side-by-side in a coherent whole that only the reader knows, since each character only knows his/her reality. It was masterfully done.

The other persons in the P&P universe also exist and, for the most part, are portrayed true to canon. In the case of Wickam, he is consistent to his true personality, but his resentments and cynicism are portrayed in different, but equally irritating ways. If you thought he was a rat before....

Is there anything I would have preferred be done slightly differently? Yes. Although this is elevating nit-picking to new heights, I have to comment that the one-month engagement felt a little bit too short for so much growth and self-awareness on Lizzy's part. A two-month engagements would have been about right. Hows that for nit-picking?
