Hallo and Simpson provide another choice to instructors of ancient Near Eastern history. Well researched, supported, and clearly written, it can easily serve as the only text for an introductory class. Non-specialists and laypeople may wish to consult it for basic facts.

An interesting conclusion to the Chattan curse

THE DEVIL'S HEART is a delightful conclusion to the Chattan Curse trilogy, and while it can be read as a stand-alone, it's much better to read the trilogy in whole as there are recurring characters. I rarely read historical romance with fantasy elements, but the Chattan curse is rather interesting, and the characters are more than they seem.

As Lyon and Harry Chattan fall prey to the Chattan curse when they fell in love in the first two books, Lady Margaret Chattan is on a trip to Fenella's home in Scotland to put an end to the curse before her brothers die. During her journey, she is beset by ravaging storms and unpredictable events, one of which put her in a coma, to be found by Heath Macnachtan, the last of the Machnactan line, descendants of Fenella who cursed the Chattans. As he falls prey to Margaret's beauty, they must work together to solve the mystery of the curse before it's too late.

The book's pacing is slow at first, to finally pick up speed about half-way in the story. I didn't like the impetuousness of Margaret's character at first, when she just up and shot Heath in a moment of panic. Furthermore, Heath continued to help this beauty despite not believing in the curse, falling prey to physical attributes. Thankfully though, the characters are shown to have more depth as the story develops, and they are presented more than just the Unattainable (title bestowed upon Margaret by her admirers) and Laird of one of the poorest clans in Scotland.

Margaret hides a scandal in her past under a glacial mask of aloofness, never letting anyone get close to see her vulnerability, and stopped believing in love. Because of that, only her brothers saw past her mask, and for them, she gained enough courage to confront a witch and a centuries-old curse despite in constant fear of failing. This sets up our lonely and emotionally-weak heroine, who learns the meaning of true love with Heath. Heath sought an escape from his poor clan through the navy, and when his brother was murdered, he was forced to confront his heritage and an impoverished clan. With so much financial trouble, it would all be solved if he could marry rich Margaret, yet he doesn't want to be labeled as a fortune hunter. This back-and-forth arguing about marrying and proposals between them became tedious once they declared their feelings, so I must admit to some relief that the curse actually aided their relationship.

What I like about this book is that Margaret realizes "love is discovering that here, at last, finally, is a person I can trust, someone I know will never hurt me and yet will always be honest with me." Heath took a while longer to fall in love with Margaret's courage and inner determination, but as usual, it's a happily-ever-after.

The mystery aspect of this book, that of Heath's brother's death and the resolving of the curse, is nicely done. With fast-paced action and eloquent writing, I recommend this book to readers, if they can overlook some flaws in characterization and pacing. Cathy Maxwell's books are usually hit-or-miss for me, so I'm glad to say this one is definitely a hit.

Enjoyable historical romance

Lady Margaret Chattan is on a mission, traveling to Scotland and accompanied by her new abigail, Smith who keeps looking at her strangely, but it might be because Smith thinks Margaret is a little crazy. Margaret is on her way to see if she can break the Chattan curse and save her brothers before they die. The curse was put on the Chattan's two hundred years ago by a vengeful witch and has caused panic and death for years as every Chattan male that falls in love, dies. Margaret's brother Harry believes she is the key to breaking the curse as she is the first female born since the curse was cast.

Society thought Margaret was perfect and both the men and women of the ton either wanted her or wanted to be her. She rarely went out however instead of people thinking it was strange, they just thought it was another thing to love about her, she was mysterious. She on the other hand does not feel worthy of anyone, as she has a secret that not even her brother's Neal and Harry are aware of.

Margaret found a kitten when she was ready to leave on her trip, a strange little creature with big eyes and flatten ears, she calls it Owl. However no one else in her traveling party can see the cat, Smith thinks she is unwell and when Margaret questions the others in the party to see if they see the cat, they all look away. So she leaves the "cat" by the side of the road and they travel on. About a mile out of their destination the weather turns and the wind pulls them off the road and down the hill where all but two perish.

Heath Macnachtan is the 16th chief of Macnachtan, a raggedy clan that is almost bankrupt. They are in danger of losing their home, Marybone. He is thinking of selling to help his sisters however does not want to leave his clan to the mercy of others that might not treat them well. Up until a year ago Heath had been first officer aboard the HMS Boyne when he heard about his brother's death. Brodie had been ambushed and murdered; they still have not found the murderer. Heath finds Margaret near where his brother was killed and he recognizes her right away from seeing her in London. He takes her to his home and when she awakes she again acts a little crazy, she is missing a book she was carrying, Fenella's book of Curses. They all tell her they never saw the book and not believing anyone, she shoots Heath - really?

As Heath and Margaret search for clues they unwittingly find the answers to other unsolved mysteries, all the while fate and other sources are at work trying to prevent her from finding anything about the curse.

This was a nice conclusion to the Chattan trilogy and a must read if you are curious about how it all ends, however I just did not really like the main two characters much and I did not see any chemistry with them. Heath was unhappy being the chief of his clan, wanting to go back to the sea and be in the Navy, when he decides to stay I was not convinced that Margaret is the reason. Margaret was just not very likable at all, she was rude to her abigail, Smith during the ride, then she was rude to Heath's family and even when she apologizes, it was not sincere. I know she was trying to save her brothers but being accusatory to all those around her when they had saved her - ugh. I did like Heath's two sisters, Laren and Anice; they were engaging and fun and accepted life with a sense of happiness.

The answers at the end seemed a little unbelievable, I suppose for a book about witches and curses it could make sense however I could not buy it. I also was unsure of what happened with Fenella and Rose, the two that started it all centuries ago; I thought there could have been more about them and the mysterious cat. Over all, the book was well written and a must read for the end of the trilogy however I wish I connected with the hero and heroine better.

Dev Haskell--Private Detective--great books!

I love every single book Mike Faricy has written in the Dev Haskell series. They are funny but yet suspenseful, great plots, love the characters. If you are looking for a great read to entertain yourself, choose all or any one of the Dev Haskell books.

Take two kidnapped kids that Dev is supposed to be babysitting, add a local mob boss, who wants money back that was stolen from him, and you have a typical Dev Haskell mystery. Typical for Dev Haskell is a great read for us. Page turning, can't put down action.

A More Violent and Less Funny Dev Episode

Dev is asked to babysit two young girls when their mother has a class to attend and the babysitter is unable to be there. He's accosted by a man who knows the mother, and the girls are taken by him. Dev's car is also taken by this kidnapper and is used to rob a gangster who thinks Dev is the robber since his car is spotted. Dev must find the girls and get the money back.

I've read and enjoyed most of the Dev Haskell stories. This one is not as funny and quirky but rather dark with much more violence. I much prefer humor over violence, but this is still a good book.
