About the Author
Dr. Carolyn Tice is the Associate Dean and Program Chair at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and was appointed to her position July, 2002. Her prior appointment was chair of the Department of Social Work, Ohio University, a position she held for nine years. Dr. Tice teaches social welfare policy. She received her BSW from West Virginia University, a MSW from Temple University, and completed her DSW at the University of Pennsylvania where she worked with Hmong refugees. Throughout her career she has worked in the nation's Appalachian region. The author of three books, Dr. Tice's research focus has been on rural aspects of social work practice and the strengths perspective. She is a site visitor for the Council on Social Work Education and a member of the Program Committee for the Maryland Chapter of the National Association of Social Work.

Editors really screwed the pooch

I have only read 3 chapters so far and it is very apparent the editors were asleep at the wheel on this one or they rushed it into print. There are far too many grammatical and spelling errors to count. I'm sure people buy this for class rather than pleasure reading but still it gets rather annoying.

I bought this for my social work class. It's well written and not dry. It is non-fiction but it won't put you to sleep. Arrived in good condition and while it's used, it's not bad.

Passion yes, clarity ?

First, read Robert Morris' thorough 5-star review to get an overview of this book's contents.

The author's frustration at not being able to persuade New Orleans' leaders of the risks of a hurricane inspired this book. I appreciate the passion. However, I came away confused, feeling that perhaps the passion was driving his writing faster than he could evaluate what actually reached the page; that perhaps there were more thoughts behind the words than were actually communicated by the ink on the paper.

Points:
p7: "Innovate differently, and win, or continue to innovate narrowly, and lose." Has Werbach not read The Innovator's Dilemma? "Innovating differently" is an enormous challenge to established companies and isn't going to be solved by exhortation.

p. 20: "Nature obsesses over protecting its young." No, only for some vertebrates. Not for oysters, or pine trees, or any of the bazillion R-strategist species, which have better survival profiles in unstable environments than the K-strategists that invest heavily in gestation and nuturing babies.

p. 20: "Integrate metrics. Nature brings the right information to the right place at the right time. When a tree needs water, the leaves curl." Huh? This is the place where I began to wonder whether there was some major additional thinking behind the words because the words didn't make sense to me. How on earth are curling leaves metrics information to the tree? Curling leaves are a survival "behavior," and perhaps metrics to someone with a watering can. But I don't water trees...

(There's actually a whole lot more on this particular page that leaves me scratching my head, pondering how the author's view of nature-as-business-model is different from mine. Population explosions in many species, followed by famine-driven die-offs, are pretty common in the nature I know.)

The story about Circuit City's failure on p. 26: "The company's human resource strategy failed." Did the strategy fail, or did they fail to follow the strategy? Maybe it's a nit, but this is a book about strategy.

Strategy #7: "Only the truly transparent will survive." OK. I'll allow that as a premise. However, the example provided is how the totally opaque functioning of AIG and its mortgage-backed securities drove the collapse of the company. I don't see that this example proves the point.

Enough already. I think this book makes an important contribution, and I wish I didn't have to work so hard to figure it out. Being sustainable is hard enough.

Manifesto, yes. Roadmap, no.

I'm really torn about this book because I think the author is clearly brilliant and he is exploring a point of view that is unique, or, at the very least, the first of many authors to publish books in this vein in the coming months.

If you are a business executive with a disposition to sustainability, this book will speak to you and is a must read. He does a pretty good job comparing his perspective to other thinking, such as that of Jim Collins (Built to Last, Good to Great, How the Mighty Fall).

But he opens with an anecdote of how he couldn't reach the leadership in New Orleans before Hurricane Katrina and he feels professional regret about not being able to frame his argument in a way it would be received.

I think that's noble and he has tried very hard to be persuasive--speaking in the language of the receiver--in this book, but he almost overly does so, pulling every business and societal buzzword (down to transparency) as conditions to be successful in meeting business and sustainability goals. Heck, actually, sustainability itself is a buzzword these days.

So, what comes out is a well-thought thesis for action, and, despite my headline, a potential roadmap. But, it's potential in that it is theoritical. I think he knows this--hence, the "Manifesto," in the subtitle. "Manifesto" worked for Jerry McGuire, though, and this author evokes similar passion.

Temper your expectations, and I think you'll be impressed with the book and retain--even apply--many of the ideas. Look to this at the ultimate prescription for sustainability in business, and you'll be disappointed.

great ideas, organizaion needs some work

Overall I really liked this book. While Werbach clearly has an environmental streak, he really does a good job of showing the reader that sustainability is more then just environmentalism, and how his long term strategies can help anyone build an enterprise which is successful in the long term. He encourages people to develop what he calls "north star goals" - goals that can be accomplished in 5-15 years and have a beneficial effect on the enterprise and society. His main strategies that he tries to drive home are (summarizing from page 19):
* Diversify across generations
* Adapt to the changing environment
* Celebrate transparency
* Plan and execute systematically, not compartmentally.
* Integrate metrics
* Improve with each cycle
* Right-size regularly, rather than downsize occasionally
* Foster longevity, not immediate gratification
* waste nothing

Unfortunately his organization could use some work. His best definition of sustainability actually comes in the conclusion of the book! (Sustainability means meeting your needs now, while not compromising your ability to meet your needs in the future). There are also a few acronyms he invents that he doesn't define until after they've been used.

The most glaring omission in the book is that while he has loads of examples and ideas, he focuses almost exclusive on the manufacturing sector of the economy, and ignores the service sector. He does mention that his ideas can be applied to the service sector too, but it would be nice to see him give more than just lip service to that notion.

Overall I don't want to dwell on the negatives too much, because there really are some great ideas in this book, and I'm convinced that enterprises which follow his roadmap will certainly be better off in the long term, as will our society as a whole. He celebrates transparency and encourages enterprises to listen to their outside critics as well as work with their partners to mutual benefit. I would certainly recommend this to anyone who is thinking about the future of their enterprise and is ready to think long term instead of just to the next quarterly earnings report.

Results revealed in the book show that profitability is highly dependent on both the industrial load management strategies and the structure of the electricity rate.

Get Dudley's Gear Handbook instead

A lot of this is "photo-copied" (quality less than stellar) from the Gear Handbook (also by Dudley). Most everything you need is there, the line drawings are acceptable, but image quality on many figures is awful. Consider getting a used copy of the Gear Handbook (First Edition, 1962 by Dudley; Second Edition, ~1990s by Townsend) instead of this book.

Excellent book, bad print quality.

Excellent book, very well written with deep knowledge - just the right one for engineers in their everyday work related to gears and gear design. Unfortunately, not good printing quality, pictures are plain bad. Don't get me wrong, you can still read it OK, but it's highly irritating at some places, as one would expect higher quality print from such valuable volume. It's a shame for the publisher. I couldn't find the 1984 edition and had to buy this one. Still a very good book.

Excellant Book - But photos could be printed better

This is an excellant book. I have an earlier version from the 1950's and both are invaluable resources at work. The text and line figures in the book are printed well, but the print quality of the photos is very marginal. I was surprized to see such poor quality in a brand new book. I think they are using the cheapest process available to make the book. However, it is still worth getting since the information is so well prepared and valuable for those who do gear design.

I’ve been trying to figure out how to say this without sounding like a pompous American, but I’m just going to say it straight forward because I think this book changed my mind about translated books in general.

When I first started reading Thirty Postcards Away, I realized almost immediately that it was a translated book. Books originally made in another language are different than English language books. I can’t really explain it. I has something to do with the storytelling factor. They relate stories and feelings differently than our authors do. It’s something that pops me out of the story right away. I have a hard time concentrating because the language is awkward for me to read.

But the thing is, I immediately liked the lead character Sofia so much, that I had to read on. Once I got over the initial uncomfortable-ness my mind felt reading it, I fell in love with the characters and story and read the rest of this book in one night. Yes, Sara Ventas, you kept me up all night!

I love how Sofia makes up words and then expects people to just follow along. I love how Jamie flips out at the slightest superstition. I love how they relate to each other and seem to click even though they are both weirdos in their own right. I love how Jamie thinks Sophia is so strange even though he’s pretty strange himself. I love Manu and how he calls Sophia out when she’s being silly. And I like the super chatty best friend Paula. There is so much to love in this book, I dare anyone to not find it enjoyable.

Another (lesser) issue my American brain had with the tale was that the author flip flops points of view, back and forth, telling what everyone in the scene is thinking. I happened to really enjoy this! I loved that I knew exactly what they were thinking of each other – right there – in the scene… not two pages later when relating it to a friend. There was only one time when this didn’t work for me and it was when the narrative told us something another character had been told that the character’s head we were in couldn’t have possibly known. One little glitch in an otherwise perfected art!

Now about the story, I have to say the not actually having sex thing between the two main characters was hotter than a lot of sex scenes I’ve read. I really liked their attraction and how they thought each other not really knock-dead gorgeous, but “normal”, yet found little things about each other so delectable they could not stay away. I enjoyed the relationship between Manu and his friends as well, even though it wasn’t as fun as the main characters chatting in the café. I could read three more volumes of Jamie and Sofia chatting. It was very entertaining and fun.

The only item in the story I didn’t quite buy was that Sophia’s ex had cheated on her in a really mean way and then she fell for someone who did (and probably will) do the same thing. Now, I love Jamie, I think the author did a really good job of making me understand his infidelity. However, I don’t think Sophia, who had been hurt like that, would accept his story so easily. And yes, she made him pay for it, but it seemed a little too easy for Jamie to pull her strings.

Overall, I loved this book and I’m glad I pressed myself to give it a chance. Would like to read a sequel!

Romantic comedy Spanish style

It's interesting comparing Spanish to British or American chic lit. The Spanish characters seem to talk more, they take month-long vacations and seem indifferent to their careers. In their thirties and forties, they still behave like teenagers. At least they have the compulsory gay friends to confide in that one needs for a good rom-rom.

The protagonist of this story, Sofia, moves from Majorca to Malaga after the breakup of a long relationship. She runs into a handsome man who lives one floor below in her apartment building. Jaime is divorced but has a demanding girlfriend who he is beginning to get tired of.

Jaime and Sofia keep running into each other in the elevator. There is chemistry. They go on a couple of dates -- more chemistry -- and then disaster, a comic mixup that breaks up the relationship just as it's beginning to catch fire. How will they put it back together? That's where the postcards of the title come in.

There are some amusing moments in this book but the generally immature characters and their endless talk about superstitions, to say nothing of their illogical actions, wear down the reader so that by the closing chapters one is thinking, 'get together already and let's get this over with.' At the end of the day, they are not as cute as they think they are -- and a bit too old to be cute anyway.
