"Were it not so tragic," confided Count Harry Kessler (1868-1937) in his diary in June 1932, "it would be grotesque." The inevitability of Hitler's ascendance had grown increasingly apparent, and the "Red Count," a publisher, art collector, and prominent Social Democrat, had reason for apprehension. Within a year, the Weimar Republic would give way to the Third Reich, and Kessler would flee to France, where he was to die without ever returning to his native Berlin. His diaries, which begin with the Armistice of 1918 and end with his death in 1937, form a lens through which the turbulent Weimar years come vibrantly to life. The Kaiser's abdication, the Spartacist Revolt, and Walther Rathenau's assassination are dissected here by an astute, if resigned, observer, yet readers will be equally impressed by his circle of friends: those who passed through his life include Albert Einstein, Bertolt Brecht, Andr Gide, Thomas and Heinrich Mann, Virginia Woolf, and Erich Maria Remarque (whose All Quiet on the Western Front Kessler published), among others. Earlier Translation of Memoirs

The translation of Kessler's memoirs entitled "Berlin in Lights" covering his life after 1918 is inferior to the new translation of his earlier life entitled "Journey to the Abyss". I can only hope that the biographer of Kessler, L.M. Easton who does the translation of Abyss will follow up with the period 1918 on. My mistake was reading To The Abyss first.

Berlin In Lights takes too much for granted. Assuming you know many minor personalities or events. It also, skips large portions of the memoirs as the translator feels an English language audience would not be interested. In addition to these faults (in my eyes) the translator then spends pages on events which truly can bore. If these were part of a more total program perhaps the reader would accept them. Having 2 pages for one year of Kessler's life and then 10+ pages of reparations negotiations is a bit much.

My last complaint would be the large sections of French some of it idiomatic which the translator assumes the reader knows.

If one reads "To The Abyss" and thinks they want to follow up, I do not recommend "Berlin In Lights". There may be other translations but when I sought one, this appeared to the be best available and it, as I now know was deficient. Would rather have kept my money and bought Easton's biography of Kessler and filled the last years in that way.

I recommend different version

See the earlier version titled "In the Twenties," translated by Charles Kessler (no relation to Harry Kessler), with Introduction by Otto Friedrich. It covers the same years. The Notes in "In the Twenties" are good, and provide context for some of the entries. As the Diary moves along, it gets better and better, with the last 10 years showing the alarm at what was happening to Germany's international reputation with the rise of Nazi fervor.

I did wonder why translations are not footnoted for the French quotes from conversations. That seems to me a poor decision. If you're going to translate the German, why not translate the French, at least as a footnote? There isn't a lot of French, and basic skills will serve you well, but it would have been easier for readers to see a footnote right at the bottom of the page. However, I was glad to see the original French in the text, it makes those writers' and artists' opinions stand out, it makes clear that they are French people speaking, not Brits, Germans, or some other nationality. Kessler and the Europeans he socialized with spoke a number of languages, so they could talk about everything from art to politics to social gossip.

I plan to read the earlier years of the diary as well as the newer "Abyss." I'm hooked.

A Great Diarist Sees the lights Going Out

Harry Kessler is one of the greatest diarists in literature. His friends were luminaries in art, music, theater, politics, and society throughout Europe in the early 20th century. This second volume of translated extracts from his Tagebuch covers the time from the defeat of Imperial Germany in 1918 through the frenetic days of the Weimar Republic to the advent of Nazism and Kessler's self-exile. The entries are sharply sketched, witty, and full of insight - for example the accounts of his relationship with Hugo von Hoffmansthal and his family are like portraits from a great novel. I recommend this book most highly - and you will also want the earlier, larger volume covering the years up to 1918.

Disappointing Modernization of a Legend

In this graphic novel version of the legend of King Arthur from Tony Lee & Sam Hart, Arthur isn't just a regular mortal man, but instead is part fairy and is chosen by the good fairies to be King of Albion (England). However, his half-sister, Morgana, is taken by the evil fairies and raised in the black arts. She comes to despise Arthur and all that he stands for. Unlike many of the stories we read about Arthur, in this version he is fully aware of his familial lineage. However, he begins to doubt the existence of the wizard Merlin until Merlin appears just before Arthur sets off to face the evil King Ulrich. Merlin sends Arthur away to the good fairy realm of Albion where a year is as a few hours in Albion. While there, Arthur falls in love with Vivianne, the Lady of the Lake. He ends up staying in Avalon for two years before returning to face Ulrich in Albion, where only a day has passed. Thus begins Arthur's journey to becoming King.

I had been looking forward to reading EXCALIBUR: THE LEGEND OF KING ARTHUR. I enjoy the legends of King Arthur and was excited to see how this updated version would be. I was disappointed. I don't mind trying to update the stories of Arthur. However, EXCALIBUR does more than just update the stories. It changes the very essence of Arthur. Instead of the man who would be king, he becomes the fairy man that's destined to be king. The mystery (and humor) of some of the tales are explained away through faire knowledge (aka magic). Arthur's love for Guinevere and the betrayal of Lancelot and Guinevere are easily forgiven because in this version of the story, Guinevere was not really Arthur's true love. That's just one example of how the Arthur legends are distorted.

I was also disappointed by the artwork. I had seen Sam Hart's work in an earlier graphic novel, OUTLAW: THE LEGEND OF ROBIN HOOD. In that book, the illustrations were much too dark. The illustrations in EXCALIBUR are better than in OUTLAW and there isn't as much shadowing and dark colors as there was in that book. However, the expressions and physical positions of the characters in EXCALIBUR are bland, dull, and often emotionless. EXCALIBUR is supposed to be an exciting updating of the Arthur legends, but it's difficult to become excited about a story when one of the most exciting panels is seeing a withered Arthur after part of his "life force" has been taken from him by an evil fairy. There is so much more of the story, but the illustration don't do the story justice.

Overall, EXCALIBUR is a disappointing update of the King Arthur legends. The story suffers from giving the tale a fairy subplot and the actual graphic novel itself suffers from mediocre illustrations.

The once and future king

This graphic novel tells the tale of Arthur, as a boy living with Ector, until Arthur's death. Despite the title of Excalibur, the sword most think of as Excalibur is called Caliburn, in this version - the name the sword was known by in stories before the sword was called Excalibur. Excalibur comes in later on, in this story`s recounting.
There are many accounts of the legend of Arthur; most of this recounting concerns the faerie realm and not that of Camelot and Arthur`s rule is only touched upon. There are some elements and characters not well explained or transitioned into; but the story is sound. The love between Lancelot and Guinevere is included.
The illustrations are not colorful, more in monochromatic colours to depict moods and time of day.

Some versions of Arthur have been sanitized into Disney versions, this is not. It is not for the very young, but those who like to read varying versions of Arthur's story, especially that pertaining to the Land of Avalon, Morgana and the Faerie realm would enjoy this .

Good (but not perfect) version of the Legend in a wonderful format

This comic tells Arthur's story, from his dark origins to his final rest in the Faerie Realm of Avalon. The illustrations are very good, I love how each color had a diferent purpose: red/orange for the battle, violet/purple for supernatural scenes... The graphic aspect of this comic has 5 stars from my point of view. The narrative is also good, but weaker than other versions of the Arthurian Legend.

This is not a traditional version of the Arthurian Legend. Of course, some of the traditional subplots of this myth show up (the Sword in the Stone, the Green Knight, Lanncelot's love for Guinevere...) but a lot of them are slightly changed to create a good, solid story: for instance, it is not Merlin but the dark fairies of the Unseelie Court who change Uther into Gorlois, but when they ask for Igraine's child as a payment, Uther gives them his step-daughter Morgana Le Fey, who lives a horrible childhood with the Unseelie Court and will take revenge on Arthur and Merlin for this (say goodbye to Malory's story of Morgan learning magic in a nunnery). Some aspects should have been better developed (Mordred's hostility towards Arthur is clear, but in traditional accounts he's more treacherous and sibylline... And for all the Gods what happened to Igraine after Arthur's birth? Did she die or something?)
Of course some subplots are made up by the writers, for instance, Arthur's love for Vivianne (The Lady of the Lake, here she is different from Merlin's lover Nimue), Uther's death at the hands of his friend Ulric... But, in my opinion, the most innovative contribution is the idea thar behind Arthur's fight for Albion (that means Britain) there is an endless war between the good fairies of the Seelie Court (Vivianne, Nimue, Bran the Blessed... Supporters of Arthur) and the Unseelie (bad fairies, Morgana is their main representative). This last idea is very similar to The Mists of Avalon, where there is a struggle between the Christian Faith (Guinevere) and the Pagan British Religion (Vivianne and Morgana), but here we've got a Faerie War.

Overall, I must say that despite some little aspects (I didn't like when one of my fauvorite characters died) it is a good version of the Myth, under those capes of colour, magic and glamour lies the old story of love, war, friendship betrayed, hatred and, at the end, forgiveness. The story has more magic than ever, but it doesn't loose its humanity.
I give 5 stars to the graphic aspect, and 3.5 to the narrative... 4 stars, all in all.

very disappointed

Somehow there was a mistake that the book I ordered a month ago was listed twice and the seller never realized it. I never recieved the book and I had to contact them in order to find out that I would NEVER be getting my book. The one good thing that happened is that they gave me a full refund right away. The bad thing is, I am a month into my class after waiting patiently for my book, and I have already had to take 3 tests without it. Thanks

In times of exams you need a companion at hand,which you can quickly use to revise multiple topics in a compact and comprehensive way so as to have a major outline of the subject on hand. This book is just that... Equally helpful for the young residents who may want a quick review of some topics.

The Better "Pocket" Book of Plastic Surgery

This is the best book I have found, has just the info that I need, no in questions, with illustrations. It is small, has a lot of information, should be in the pocket of every Plastic Surgery Resident, and should be read by anyone who looks for a book that in few minutes want to get the mos important info about any field of Plastic Surgery.
