5 star reviews?
By Dawn Swan
It is always interesting to see how others react to books I've read. But I am very surprised by all the 5 star reviews. I actually did read the whole book. I kept expecting it to grow into something more as I continued on. But it just got to be kind of a joke instead. I liked all the characters. Even though the 2 main characters had split personalities - one a mature adult, the other a twelve year old. Even though the only real action between them was " Yes, I want it!" "No, I don't" "Yes, I want you!" No, I can't!" "Yes" "No, wait!" Yes!" No!" ---- on to second book in series.... For a hero who had never been to earth I was surprised on how up he was on human adolescent communication. To me it kind of defeats the purpose of a believable romantic interest when he goes ga ga over Fruit Loops and wears a Spider Man knapsack. The quick jumps from adolescent to mature warrior by both of them left me dizzy. I don't know how either of them survived this book. I have never read a book where the "whole" book was simply lust that was unfulfilled. If the redundancy was taken out it would be a 30 page book.

3.5 stars
By The Every Free Chance Reader
Did I enjoy this book: I ended up enjoying this book after I got past the first 75 pages or so. Then, I had to see how it ended. I read every free chance I had until I reached the end.
I found the beginning kind of slow. It is difficult for me to explain why I found the beginning hard to get through. I was glad to learn about the different classes, races, and cultures of the characters. We have shapeshifters, vampires, werewolves, elves, and halflings. The world building was amazing as well. Very descriptive. I could see everything in my mind's eye. But it was just slow to read. I wanted it to move a bit faster.
Also, the transitions between points of view was sometimes difficult to keep up with. The points of view shifted between Forest, Syrus, the king, Kitch, Phillippe, and a few tohers. I wanted the transitions to be a bit smoother and clearer. I caught on but it was rough sometimes.
The two main characters were very well written. Forest is a halfling who is looked down upon but who is also an excellent fighter. She is hard and tough yet broken and sad. She has amazing strength...she went along with escorting the vampire prince despite her absolute hatred of vampires. She did what she had to do. Forest is a complex character that was developed wonderfully. Syrus, the vampire prince, was arrogant but humbled. The fact that he was blinded helped him become less arrogant. Syrus, too, was a complex character but endearing.
These two characters together had wonderful chemistry. The way they interacted with each other had me laughing at times, sighing at times, getting frustrated at times. I just thoroughly enjoying their story. This is the point where I really got into the book and wanted to see how it ended. I was invested in Forest and Syrus.
Speaking of the ending...UGH! What a cliffhanger!!!! I will definitely be reading the next book in this series. I have to know what happens next!
Would I recommend it: I would recommend this book.
Will I read it again: I will not but I will read book 2, Forest Fire.

5 stars and more!
By kirstyv
For a huge fan of fantasy fiction, I was slightly apprehensive to Tenaya Jayne's approach to the genre . . . but OH! I love being surprised!! :-)
For me this book was like the treasure box full of jewellery and sparkly things I used to play with as a little girl at my Nan's . . . I used to dress up and play pretend for hours with the pretty ornaments, kind of like the way I hid inside the pages of 'Forbidden Forest', letting its fantasy and characters envelop me.
Tenaya Jayne has created a world so vivid, yet outside the normal genre of the fantasy/paranormal that the story was absorbing and Forest is a half-elf, half-shifter who hates vampires after being abused by one, but is now being sent on a mission to protect the Vampire Prince, Syrus, who seeks a wizard to restore his sight.
Amidst all of this, it appears that war is about to break out in Regia, the home of all paranormal 'creatures' and the werewolves, vampires, elves, ogres and witches are all ready to fight against and among each other.
However, Forest and Syrus find themselves only concerned with each other. Forest does not want to spend time with a vampire, particularly one she is having to fight her attraction to, and Syrus feels frustrated because he cannot see her face and does not know why she feels such an animosity towards him. The banter created by Tenaya Jayne is humorous and also filled with sexual tension and this atmosphere only intensifies throughout the book, but any reader expecting gratuitous sex scenes will be disappointed!
I want to rant on about what wonderful characters Forest and Syrus are - they kick-ass, together and alone! - and as they are written cleverly I felt as I was knowing them as friends and wanting to spend more time with them!
And the plot? I loved the threads and intricacies and the twists- I didn't want the end to come (and the sequel isn't ready!) but the irony is that the climax is worth getting to the end for!
